So we’re doing a little more remodeling, and need the services of a plumber/electrician/construction guy. Any recommendations in the TV area? We’re not cheap, we just like straight talk and we’re not getting it. The only estimate so far seems really high to me. When he walked in the door, the first thing I asked him for was his hourly rate ($65). He quoted $1,145 for:
Replace 6 angle stops under various sinks
Install 2 shower valves and a tub spout, replace tub drain, replace overflow plate
Replace 3 hanging light fixtures, two of those on a 17′ ceiling
Install 1 bathroom light/fan fixture, which requires restructuring existing mount and probably drywall repair
As generous as I get with the math, I can’t come up with $1,145 worth of $65/hour work unless he sleeps at least 4 of those hours. He did not provide a breakdown of the time for each job and even left me VM stating “that’s the price if you want me to do the work.” Because that will make me want him MORE.
Before anyone says “why not do it all yourself?? It’s so easy…” I barely have time to post this, let alone learn how to solder a shower valve 🙂
The service industry in America do like to gouge people to death….

Find a trusted handyman by referral, not necessarily a licensed plumber or “contractor” who has a habit of ridiculous racking up the hourly rate….
The angle stops and shower valve are a breeze. The overflow plate probably is easy too.. The tub drain is a little tricky, but not necessarily if you have one of these.
Replacing 3 hangin light fixtures shouldn’t be that hard…
The possibly difficult thing might be the bathroom light/fan fixture…
For $800, I would be happy to do it for you if you were in S.D. And even then I think that’s overpriced. That would even be kinda excessive me thinks.
