    Someone informed me that the Bureau of Automotive Repair in CA will buy your old car so long as it’s running for $1,000. I could scarcely believe it but a quick look on the internet produced an application. i filled it out and sent it in, expecting nothing, but i got a coupon saying yeah, we will buy your old car for $1,000. Not necessary to buy another car. I was stunned. I have an 89 civic was trying to get around $1,000 for.

    My spouse was also shocked, as it was her position that no one would ever give me $1,000 for the car because of its smell, condition and irritating bumper stickers.

    Anyway, if you have a crappy old car, you can sell it to the government. unhappily, i still have to go get it smogged. and i cannot find the title. maybe i shouldve sold it to the dealer for 100.

    i can’t say whetehr this is a good govt program on balance or not, as I am too biased, from excitement about getting $1,000 for my car. but i thought piggs might be able to intelligently chew on this one for a while

    you could sell your car in pieces for more than $1000. Probably closer to $2.5k, if you chop it up.

    I’ve done this program before with a 1985 prelude that had over 250,000 miles on it. It’s a gross polluter program so your car has to fail smog and still be drivable. You submit the paperwork and then they send you down to one of the car wreckers in Otay where you hand them the keys and they hand you a check for 1,000.

    Destroy you cat but, I find it hard to believe that you can’t find someone to buy a functioning car for more than $1,000. Used car prices have been off the charts since CFC.

    Yeah you should be able to get more than a grand if it passes smog. The reason I did it was because I failed the smog miserably and you can’t transfer title without a smog. A grand was better than the effort to try to get it to pass.

    Disconnect the oxygen sensor. You’ll run rich, and that should cause you to fail. If fact, your check engine light should go on, which in itself would probably make you fail.

    im scared of liability during any test drive. Also i’m scared of getting carjacked. or robbed by someone responding to my ad. Also i’m scared of having anyone over my house but also too tired to meet anywhere else.

    I guess I’m not really up to selling a used car.

    you know, in the old days, i never thought about virtually any possible consequences or risks of anything…

    Most of those things seem valid. I don’t like giving random people an invitation to be around my house and family. Many respondents on craigslist are casing houses.

    When I sold one of my older Acura’s. I made the person meet at my office. I had the guy walk into my lobby where they had security cameras posted. I asked the guy for his drivers license and I asked him for permission to make a photocopy of it, explaining it to him, that I I will leave the copy with the security guard and he can have it back after the test drive, and that it’s no different from any other dealership who does the same thing. I said it was for my safety. For his safety, I had the security guard id me. I haven’t had anyone object to this, because it was reasonable. If anyone does balk at this, move on…

    That’s one way to do it,Flu. Some people wouldn’t or can’t take private business around their work places.

    I was giving away and selling some big and small things I don’t need, including a car that a neighbor gave me.

    The obvious early stages of casing happened with building materials and the free firewood. I let two people know that I knew what was happening and that they would fail and never heard from them again. Rather avoid those confrontations though.

    if scardey wasn’t so far out there, I’d offer to buy the civic for parts for $1000. Would be easy to sell it off.
