(On the lighter side) I just got the GoPro Hero2 camera, no bigger than a few cubes of sugar, 2″x1″x1″, easy to use, the video and pictures are great. There is no screen so you just aim it in the right direction and take the shot or video. I took it out this weekend, the riding scene is long but notice the quality and how smooth the video is and I am bouncing all over the place.

I got it online, $249.

Thanks SD T, make sure you test the way you are going to mount the camera and try it out to see how it films. It is better if you can get to the buttons to turn it on and off and switch between video and picture modes, etc. Also, you don’t want the thing in the way or falling into the ocean.

Very nice, desmond. I’ve been looking for something to replace the camera I took this video with:

Crappy video quality, obviously, but not if you consider the camera cost $20 and weighs 2/3 of an ounce.

Nonetheless, time to move up.

that is a awesome video. I think the GoPro with the case will be to heavy for the glider. And another $300 shot in the a## when you don’t “chicken out”. If you use Windows see if you have Windows live movie maker, easy program to use and you can really jazz up your videos.

My only problem with the GoPro is it didn’t do well with pressure and humidity changes. I only brought the solid door with me to Colombia and every single video (flying) fogged up within a few minutes.

What are you using to edit?

I don’t understand ‘brought the solid door’.. I know someone who has a GoPro mounted to the underside of an aircraft and has flown in in Florida (up to about 8,000 ft altitude) with no fogging. There is a significant temperature change w/ the altitude as well as humidity. The GoPro is in an enclosure.. I think he runs it in an underwater enclosure.. it is mounted on the outside of the Aircraft (underneath, behind the nosewheel). He also uses an under tail mount, including on an OV-1 he owns.

NOTE: It wasn’t the dive enclosure.. he is using the standard waterproof housing.

Every GoPro comes with both a solid and perforated back door door to the hatch. I brought only the solid, “waterproof” one.

One more thing, I also use a Nikon S9100 for the pictures and other video that is not POV. I try not to use endless boring riding footage. I mixed it up more in this video:

Finished my video for this years Quail Hunting. The video mostly shows scenery in Los Padres & Angeles Forests. There is some good footage of the snow storm we got last week. Hard to believe it’s So Cal.

Hero 3 is now out. Several paragliding buddies have said it’s a big improvement.

Hero3 is awesome. Advice:
(1) Get the back-mounted LCD
(2) Don’t record in 2,7k format unless you want to downconvert or have playback overwhelm 90% of computers.

Cool footage, Desmond! I stumbled upon the GoPro cameras while doing some research for my work. I ended up buying 5 Hero 3 Black cameras back in November 2012 as they were just rolling out. These were my first GoPros and I can’t speak to the earlier models. As for the Hero 3 Black, the image quality is superior to the others, it has a faster frame rate, and it has built in wi-fi that you can control with the included remote control.

The Hero 3 Black came out a bit prematurely and there were some bugs that they are still trying to iron out. These mostly have to do with battery/external power and wi-fi issues. Other than these, this is a kick-ass camera.

I highly recommend for those reading this thread to look into Wasabi GoPro batteries. They are third party and are MUCH cheaper (and some would say perform better) than those from GoPro. I’d also suggest checking out YouTube to see what others are doing with their GoPro cameras. A favorite channel of mine is this one: http://www.youtube.com/user/micbergsma

There are many others as well.
