September 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM #751299zkParticipantDaily newspapers.
*scoff*
Soon they’ll join town criers as relics of the past.
September 10, 2012 at 12:36 PM #751300briansd1GuestThe UT has been a Republican megaphone for decades.
Doug Manchester bought the UT for the price of the real estate assets of the company. He basically go the paper for free.
As far as political slant, San Diego used to be Red and it’s turned purple. As a region, San Diego is becoming bluer everyday.
The UT will continue to lose readership and its advertising assets will lose value if it fails to provide a product relevant to our region’s demographics.
I’m not too worried about Doug Manchester, though. He can afford to lose money on the paper.

well, there was at least an attempt to be superficially non-biased. now it is just blatantly toeing the right wing line.
I suppose the general lack of concern about how Manchester is reshaping UT and NCT is the real story here: daily printed newspaper is truly on its way out.
September 10, 2012 at 1:49 PM #751303HatfieldParticipantAlthough print media is on its deathbed, I do worry whether Dougie will be effective in using his new media empire to sway public opinion in favor of port district and downtown development project he has vested interests in. This is the whole reason he bought the UT in the first place.
Interestingly enough, KPBS reported earlier today that the SDUT and Manchester have both denied the acquisition of the NCT, but SDBJ is standing by its story.
September 10, 2012 at 8:17 PM #751306briansd1GuestBack in the day, Jim Copley, Ernest Hahn and arnholt Smith entertained Nixon, ford and Reagan and were heavy lifters in politics.
Manchester is more of a businessman. But he did fund Prop 8.
The Reader and Voice of San Diego are great alternative local news outlets.

I really like the Voice.
Except for the Brit.
And the Canadian.
And that Hispanic Italian guy with the charts.September 10, 2012 at 10:33 PM #751314enron_by_the_seaParticipantAs long as there is piggington.com, I am not worried about gettting my unbiased local news!
Papa Doug is looking more and more like Mr. Burns in Fraudcast news.

September 11, 2012 at 5:50 PM #751350lindismithParticipantA friend of mine is so pissed off, he’s looking into whether he can file an anti-trust complaint….
I suspect the ‘Manchester’ point of view will just continue to turn readers off which will create more opportunity for Voice, and/or someone else to come in with another daily.
September 12, 2012 at 3:39 PM #751357CA renterParticipant[Edited to delete political remark.]
———–“The disconnect parallels his baffling politics. Manchester told KPBS he supports “limited government” and yet he advocates for massive military spending and taxpayer support of a new football stadium. On the one hand, he hates the idea of a new City Hall, but he’s wildly supportive of the Navy’s effort to build a new headquarters, which benefits, of course, him.
In fact, he’s a fan of big government as long as it is based on religious authoritarianism, provides for private enrichment off public assets and spends what’s left on unquestioned militarism.

Buh-bye nctimes…
November 9, 2012 at 8:16 AM #754225svelteParticipantDidn’t get them far, even in local elections.
I just checked out UT to see how they are treating the subject. Their overview of who won was short and sweet. Wish all their articles had been that way.
And look at the comments section – quite a few are not happy with the media monopoly!
