I have seen a lot of public storage ads lately. “got too much stuff? Save money by storing them!” This absolutely sicken me. Within Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley I see at least 5 different public storage sites. This is the biggest money waste and these companies rely on people’s laziness to profit. People put away their junks thinking that they will clean them out after a year but usually they will rent these storage spaces for 4 or 5 years.
Wait, if you owned one of these you would still have to commute, hmmm does not pass the laziness test to me, I guess you could build a house on the site as well, that might work. ( Just kidding).
yea, I read somewhere this was one of the best businesses to start. People don’t want to part from their stuff.
It used to be the haven of divorced folks… You needed a place to store stuff after moving out from the wife/hubby.
Now I look at folks who have their garages completely packed full of junk, and park their relatively expensive cars outside… and pay storage fees as well.
I don’t get it.
Note too self… time for another yard sale… time to purge more junk.
In theory they provide a useful service. There are plenty of legitimate short term uses for a storage locker, and in terms of $/sq foot they are way cheaper than renting an apartment and easier to get. I also know some small businesses use storage units effectively as they grow before making the jump to leasing permanent space.
However, I also have relatives that use their storage unit as a sort of second garage for all their junk they are unwilling to part with. Smaller house + storage unit is probably cheaper than bigger house. Let’s face it, there are far, far stupider things most people waste their money on.

I agree with SD Realtor. The storage industry is a growing business model, and a highly profitable one too.
One of the guys who works for me, had two storage units full of junk such as vinyl records. I told him to throw out everything and put the money into savings. He’s had the units for 7 years already… money down the drain. Wnat to clean up one day, but that day never comes.

But I seriously doubt the stuff they find in these lockers is worth what they claim on TV.
But I have not tried to sell stuff so really don’t know.
I think there’s a big psychological component to storage similar to investing. People hate to take a loss, refuse to acknowledge how little their stuff is worth. Storing old furniture and crap can be a way to avoid recognizing the depreciation.
