You wine-aficionado Piggs are missing out by NOT touring the Anderson Valley, Mendocino Coast and Ukiah area. Fill your tanks and get up there!!

If you’re lucky, you can find a 5 ltr box for $5.99 at CVS or Rite Aid :=]
You’re a “cheap date,” pri_dk.

http://www.wine.com/V6/Caymus-Special-Selection-Cabernet-Sauvignon-2009/wine/111899/detail.aspx%5B/quote%5DThat is a great bottle of wine not a decent bottle of wine. There are lots of decent wines out there for under $30 and many between $10 and $20. There are some but very few under $10 (New Zealand Sauv Blancs come to mind). The last two vintages (2010 and 2011) were devastating for most US vineyards because of cold/rainy Summer/Early Fall seasons. I just got back from a trip to Lompoc to taste a bunch of 2010 wines and they were decent but nothing really stood out with the exception of a Jaffurs 2010 Viognier. Value wine drinkers are probably going to have to pay more or drink lower quality wines for a few years if they dont have a nice cellar stash.

January 17, 2012 at 10:46 AM #736114SK in CVParticipantI’m not a wine connoisseur by any means, and rarely spend more than $20 on a bottle. I think many wine drinkers are familiar with The Prisoner, a zin blend out of Orin Swift winery. I think it runs in the low $30’s on sale. It’s good and I have bought it a few times for special occasions. This weekend I bought a couple of bottles of their zin, called Saldo, on sale for about $20. Great bottle of wine. One of the best for the price I have ever tasted. For the price, i’d take it over their Prisoner label.
January 17, 2012 at 11:10 AM #736117sdrealtorParticipantOrin Swift makes crowd pleaser wines that are as we say “pop and pour”. They are made for immediate consumption and not aging. They sell a ton of wine to more newbie wine drinkers who want tot drink them now. Very solid wines but much better and collectable wines can be found at same price points.
January 17, 2012 at 11:12 AM #736118UCGalParticipantI use the following criteria –
– Is it under (or not much above) $10 at costco?
– Does it have one of those wine spectator wine advocate placards giving it a 90+ rating?
– Is it a type I like? (I don’t really like Malbecs, Reislings, and a few others. Just a preference thing. Tend to stick to cabs, chards, and sauv blanc.)If it doesn’t fit a category I know, like a lot of the foreign wines, I’ll try a bottle… if I like it, I buy more the next week.
Current faves: Layer Cake (primitivo/zin.)
and a Sicilian red that I don’t remember the name of (Lemura?)fwiw – drinking red sicilian wine is good for your cholesterol.

Wow, you have almost the exact opposite taste in wine I do! Love Malbecs and Resilings. I used to be a big Pinot Noir fan, but the “Sideways” effect drove prices up.For me, the “Decent” price point is around $20-30 at full price, which usually puts it around $15 at Costco. With some exceptions, quality does seem to improve noticably as you move from $5 to $10 and from $10 to $20 (although obviously there are stinkers at that price), but beyond the $20 price point it’s more about getting lucky or finding a great recommendation than anything else.
January 17, 2012 at 11:20 AM #736120sdrealtorParticipantJust a comment on wine prices. and some simple math. Most people wont spend more than $20 on wine and even that is alot for many people. However most people will go out and easily spend $6 to 10 for a glass of wine with dinner. They are usually getting mass produced $6 to $10 a bottle plonk for that price. There are 4 to 5 glasses in a bottle.
I suggest you try treating yourself sometime. Take that same $6 to $10/glass times 4 and you can get a great bottle of wine to drink at home. Two nice full glasses each with a great home cooked meal. It will change how you look at wine.
January 17, 2012 at 11:56 AM #736128sdduuuudeParticipantAnything that says “Rum” on the bottle.
January 17, 2012 at 3:07 PM #736145zzzParticipantJacarandoso……Some reds we are enjoying right now include the Terlato Peak Series..Cardinals, Angels and Devils
Also really like Elyse Cabs and Zins.
There are others I can suggest but are winery or wine club purchases. PM if interested
