ParticipantI have lived in the area for 10 yrs, albeit East of 5, renting and I’ve looked periodically to buy or rent in some of those complexes so my daughter would go to Torrey Pines Elementary too. But in the end, I thought they were too expensive for the quality of the condos. So we are still renting in the area, but East of 5 (that goes to Doyle Elementary). Do you live in the area too?
Yes, student rentals there are a big problem.
My favorites would be Cape La Jolla and SouthPointe, but Cape La Jolla (Gardens) is too expensive but newer and better shape; LJ Shores Heights is even more expensive. In general many of those complexes are quite old (70s) and probably less than half owner-occupied (Southpointe is about half). Personally didn’t like the Eastbluff. Woodlands West is ok. Others that you mentioned are too small, IMO. I am picky about floorplans. But depends what you can live with and how much you want to spend, and if being in La Jolla/UTC area is important for reasons other than school (e.g. commute).

December 30, 2011 at 7:40 PM #735225ParticipantAt the last moment, I got a new job and we’ve decided to continue with a Montessori school (my daughter went to a Montessori preschool) for a little while, we thought it best for her personality, even though it’s expensive. So she is going to the Mission Bay Montessori Academy – in University City, at least for K. I’ve heard good things about Doyle though. What I didn’t like was the 7:30 am start!!!

We are considering Mission Bay Montessori as well but as you mentioned, cost is a factor.

In principle, true… but if you want to live close to school… aren’t the good private schools in relatively expensive areas? Just asking, I haven’t really considered private schools – since the ones close to where I live are in the 20k+ range tuition (Francis Parker, La Jolla Country Day) – totally out of question for me. MBMA is 10k+, about the same as the preschool…December 31, 2011 at 12:00 AM #735244ParticipantIt might be actually 7:30-7:40.It varies a lot. MBMA starts at 8:20-8:30. I think 8:15-8:30 is more common…Torrey Pines elem. starts at 9 am. Really the start hour was a factor when considering to either rent or buy in Torrey Pines attendance area, more than any API score… I think 2 of the Scripps Ranch public elem start also at 9 am. Ashley Falls in CV starts at 8 am. You have to find out for your particular area. And it still might change from year to year, so no absolute guarantees…
