A number of federal and state laws might apply, but you really need advice from someone familiar with North Carolina and not from a bunch of California ****house lawyers π The only advice I can give in good conscience is to mix yourself a nice strong drink and relax. We have a number of highly qualified resident mixologists. Oh yeah, and wear sunscreen. (Though I guess even the sunscreen thing is being debated these days.)
It might take a while to find an honest lawyer … so here are a few things I Googled up that might help you sleep better. The usual warnings about Internet legal “advice” apply, of course.

You have our sympathy though. I’m sure even the landlords on the forums will agree your situation is kinda messed up.
