My newly installed landscaping had turning into the main dining hall for a family of pocket gophers. Now that Eddie was gone (Killer egret), I was left to my own devices. I kill-trapped a few and tried poisons but never got it under control. They destroyed major trees and shrubs and about $1000 worth of plants. Eventually they got hip to my metal clamp-traps and would back-fill holes to where I could hardly remove the traps. I was going nuts -grrrrrr…
And then Big Albert showed up. Albert works for Western Exterminator. He is the badass, King of Pocket Gopher Death (next to Eddie). My neighbor referred him. He showed up with this metal chrome probe and punched his way into the GopherVille underground main super highway and dropped in moisture-activated gas pellets (aluminum phosphide). No more gophers!
Aluminum phosphide is the ticket but is dangerous. A company needs a special license to even carry it in a truck. Many extermination companies cannot even offer it. Albert told me that it might not be available for residential use in about a year and then its back to strychnine (not as effective).
The cost is $100 and includes up to three applications but two usually do the job. Call Western Exterminator at 760-741-3186. I do not have any connection to Western Exterminator and there may be other companies that offer this, but if you are having problems controlling pocket gophers, Albert is your man.
I do not like the idea of poison, you never know what could happen. I have caught gophers since I was a kid, lived out in San Pasqual on a ranch, and have always used the (Macabee) metal traps. You must not be setting them correctly, I have never had a gopher backfill a hole. When I set a trap, you have to use two per hole, my success rate is 90%+ in a overnight time period.
