Here is a pretty amazing tool created for a data viz competition sponsored by Google. It visually breaks down where your tax dollars are spent into pretty pie charts:
You enter your income and it calculates the amount that you paid for each of the tax brackets, SS, and medicare along with your effective tax rate. You can then break it down to the specific dollar amounts that you paid for a particular program for the year, for example $XXX for “Operation and Maintenance of the Air Force”, or $YY for “Space Operations.” I was disappointed that none of my tax dollars went to “Beer Research” or “Fetus Murder” but maybe that will change with the next budget.
