If you want to patent a method of swinging on a swing you are too late.

It is not trivial, free or quick. Get a book at the local library, search the Internet or talk to an attorney.
Nolo has a decent book (Patent It Yourself) if you want to do it yourself.

September 9, 2010 at 9:13 AM #602594jpinpbParticipantI know a few people who are checking into this, so I’d be interested in any feedback as well.
About the only thing I know is you have to get a patent attorney to research whether there’s a patent already existing on the idea for the product or something similar. Then if there’s not, you have to apply/submit for a patent, pay whatever the fees are and wait for it to get approved, however long that process takes.
T4L – why manufacture overseas? Help this country out. Set up shop in Detroit or something. Surely by now you can get some cheap labor w/the way the U6 numbers are.

If you are dealing with business method patent an attorney will help a lot if you want to draft a defensible patent.
UCSD extension program has a few intellectual property related classes, including ‘patent drafting’, ‘patent searching’ and ‘principles of patents’.
