Depends on how bad your problem is.
The things that I did when I declared war on bugs was
1)Cut all vegetation right along the house. Previous owner planted plants/shrubs right along the house…So either I removed them or replaced them with desert plants. The issue was the original plants/shrubs required a lot of water which became a magnet for bugs during hot weather
2)If you have any vines/plants that grow along the wall and/or wrap around a beam/etc, it’s best to remove that. Previous owner had ivy vines growing up and down the side of the house. Baddddd…
3)If your home isn’t too big, you can first try to buy a bug sprayer can and get some spectracide.
Something like http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=bug+sprayer&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=4705210968067329077&ei=Tsh4TPOtB422sAPAor3tCg&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCYQ8wIwAA#http://www.spectracide.com/ProductCategories/OutdoorInsecticide/TriazicideSoilTurfConcentrates/
I ended up getting a guy that lives in north county called Zotco Exterminator. Hewas pretty reasonable: $250ish for one time, guarantee to work for 1 year. If it doesn’t he comes back for free.

August 28, 2010 at 9:03 AM #597717sdduuuudeParticipantI had some friends spray for black widows this year also. Possible it is one of those things where this year it is black widows due to the weather or something. If you haven’t had them in previous years, I would guess that the 1-time cleaning would do the trick.
Termites, on the other hand, I like the idea of the annual thing.
