“Go purchase whichever house you like. Calculate the maximum total purchase price as follows:
a. $50,000;
b. Plus whatever amount you are willing to write a check on your account for;
c. Times 5.
So, if you are willing to write a check for $50,000, the total maximum budget would be 50,000 plus 50,000 = 100,000 x 5 = 500,000.
If you write a check for 60,000, then purchase something at $550,000. If you don’t want to write a check at all the maximum would be $250,000.
This will allow us to put 20% down and get a good interest rate. Also, I will be able to keep some money in savings so we can continue to pay our bills, student loans, etc. and have something in reserve in case we need it.
Just pick whatever you want, deal with Joe to negotiate the price, write me a check, and I’ll get the paperwork going for the mortgage.
