    Rental status is highly correlated to lower socio-economic status also a strong predictor of academic achievment of students. In other words, I you rent you are likely to be poor and dumb.

    There are always exceptions of course. An executive who relos out to an unfamiliar area, decides to rent for 6 months to learn more about a area.

    Renters are held sway to a a landlord’s whim. Your landlord could be in foreclosure without your knowledge. One day the Sheriff knocks on your door, you’re on the street. He can raise your rent an a whim. He’s betting that you think that moving is too painful for you and you will swallow it. When I was a landlord I occasionally did the same thing, randomly did a big 10% increase to test their aversion. I would make up some excuses, taxes fee, cost of business etc etc. Most of the time the sucker would eat it without too much complaint. Only when they seriously and credibly threatened to move did I back down a bit. I generally wouldn’t do a big raise too often again for that person. I had a couple tenents I raised a number of times without serious complaint, those dudes and dudettes paid for some vacations in Hawaii, ha.

    I pose a question. Is renting for losers or smarties?

    well, i don’t know. maybe on average people with money and education tend to own houses, and broke dopes tend to rent. Still, the ownership status of your home doesn’t in itself make you wealthy or smart. im a not-poor renter in the same spot for almost a decade renting away. If I owned the home I’d be a bit poorer, maybe, certainly no smarter. Good looking girls tend to go out with good looking guys, but if im sleeping with some hot chick, it doesn’t make me look any better. renting is for renters.
