    I purchased a townhouse on the East side of Mira Mesa almost two years ago. It’s a decent neighborhood with mostly good people, but one neighbor in particular has caused a lot of problems for us.

    The residents of the house in question are a single mother and her two teenage sons. The mother is rarely home, and the teens are left alone to find all sorts of trouble to get into. They regularly have very shady people over to the house, and openly sell drugs out of the back door. They cause disturbances late at night and generally make everyone around them uncomfortable in their own homes. The police are at the house at least once a week, but nothing ever seems to change.

    Last night it all came to a crescendo when there was a home invasion robbery and kidnapping at the house. The troublemaking teenagers apparently ripped off the wrong people in a drug deal, and the guys came to the house with guns and a tire iron to get their money back. A friend of one of the teens was dragged into a car at gunpoint and kidnapped. He was dumped on the side of the freeway, still alive, 3 hours later.

    I had a long talk with one of the police officers on the scene last night, and I was further assured that not much will be done about the situation. He even referred to the problems caused by the teens as “not really a big deal,” and insisted on referring to them as victims who’s illegal behavior was not much of a concern. I replied that the real victims are the neighbors who deal with this garbage on a daily basis.

    Obviously I’m very frustrated with the situation and will no longer sit back and allow this to continue. I would like to find out if the current residents are the renters or the owners. Hopefully they are renting and I can contact the owners about the matter. The HOA has been worthless in providing this information and I’ve had trouble finding it on the county website. I’m also interested in ideas, legal but not necessarily ethical, to encourage them to leave the neighborhood.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    I have advice for you…..

    Move.

    Using an old realtor adage… Location, location, location, location.

    Otherwise, more tactical, see if you and your other neighbors are willing to go to the HOA board and try to make it uncomfortable for that said family so they move. Or get yourself a hidden video camera, get the guy dealing drugs filmed and turn it in.

    However, with two juvi’s I wouldn’t want to mess with them if I had family to consider.

    I’d opt for my first advice, because my family and personal safety are more important than any dollar amount.

    If you do not take flu’s advice, then get some security in the house: alarm system and perhaps a dog. I support having firearms in the house for personal protection only if you know how to use one and do not have small children that might have access to the firearm. However if you have children and firearms, then by all means teach them how to use them at an early age. You do not have to have an attack trained large dog, just a dog that will bark when they hear something unusual or in my dogs case, every time someone rings the bell. Some insurance companies will drop you if you have certain breeds on a list they have. You should also enhance perimeter security if you stay with motion sensing lights.

    I have two dogs that bark any time someone gets close to the house. I also have a Remington 870 shotgun, but need to upgrade my ammo. The #8 birdshot I have isn’t going to cut it. No kids in the house.

    My main concern is trying to force those particular residents to move. The neighborhood is pretty quiet aside from that one house.
