    Just wondering if anyone here knows how (or if) banks keep track of the $100 bills they distribute to the public. I loaned a friend $400 awhile ago. He recently paid me back – in $100 bills. I’ve already used 2 of them.

    This evening I paid for my meal at a local establishment with the 3rd one and was informed that it was counterfeit. When you hold it up to the light, there is a faint picture of Franklin on the right hand side of the bill – that’s normal. On this one, you could see that Franklin had another nose popping out of the left side of his head. Definitely counterfeit.

    I broke the bad news to my friend and he informed me he got the bills from a local bank. Does anybody know if a bank keeps track of this somehow? Any chance for him to go to the bank and have them make it right? Could it have been a simple human error by the bank? He’ll make it right with me, but it sucks that he’s out another $100.

    Now I get to think of some fun, creative thing to do with the bogus bill. Light a cigar with it? Give it to a homeless dude? Stick it to the ceiling at Players in Kearny Mesa?

    Thanks for any input.

    A similar thing happened to my coworker. His friend withdrew $100 bills from his bank, and paid him rent using this money. My coworker deposited the notes to his bank (different bank). The teller informed him that it’s a counterfeit, confiscated the note, and said the secret service would get in touch with him shortly. Bank said there’s no recourse in getting the money back.

The teller informed him that it’s a counterfeit, confiscated the note, and said the secret service would get in touch with him shortly. Bank said there’s no recourse in getting the money back.

    when someone starts up the counterfeit printers for $20 bills we’re all doomed. sounds like you didn’t get one of those North Korean “superbills” (i.e. supposed to be nigh-undetectable). i wonder how many counterfeit $100 bills there are in the world compared to legit ones?

    Well, counterfeiting is more than just getting a counterfeit printer. Getting the paper (technically fabric/clothe) right is often the harder part.

    Btw, don’t know if others have noticed. Several years back the Secret Service made all scanner manufacturers put in a software check in their firmware so that if an user tries to scan US bank notes, the driver will abort the scan. I can fold the bill in half and scan correctly, but not the whole bill.
