GuestIt depends one your lifestyle also.
Generally people buy nicer houses than they rent. That’s a big step in incremental expenses. New houses don’t require much maintenance but old houses always need something. Furnishings need to be bought and replaced.
I know people who are constantly working on their houses thereby spending more (and saving less) than they’d like to realize. They also have a lot less personal free time.
Related to the high-speed train tread, if we had them and the fares were cheap, wouldn’t rather go somewhere than work on the back yard all weekend?

Wives value security most. Men marry for looks. Women marry for security. Security equals money… but…
A house equals security in the sense that it’s immovable. The husband can’t disappear with it and leave her high and dry.
“Community and roots” and kids are security in the sense that they are ties that bind.
A house is security in the sense that there’s always a “honey do” list. The husband can’t go off and hang out with his buddies when there are flowers to plant, the lawn the mow, the room to paint, things to shop for, etc…
