I’m think that that many posters here have had or will have cataract surgery soon enough.
My dad who is 79 is having cataract surgery.
He’s considering the multifocal lens from Alcon, Acrysof ReSTOR. It’s a new lens that’s been on the market only since 2005. In 2008 they came out with the same lens with different power.
I’ve searched the Net but all the info is marketing from Alcon and surgeons so of course they won’t say anything bad.
Do you know anyone who’s had cataract surgery and used multifocal lenses? (there are 3 brands on the market).
Multifocal lenses promise to give full range vision lessening or obviating the need for reading glasses. They’ve been on the market only since the early 2000s.
Financially, multifocals did not produce the financial windfall for the ophthalmology business Lasik surgery did. Old people are used to wearing glasses already so they are not clamoring to be reading glasses free.
Mutifocals are only partially covered by Medicare. You have to pay at least $3,000 extra for the “upgrade”:
Multifocals can cause distortions, halos and starry vision. It’s not recommended for:
– pilots
– professional night drivers.
– those who are very particular with how precise their vision is.
I’m thinking that a monofocal lens is good enough. It’s been the standard all along.
