My husband and I moved to San Diego over a year ago—we are looking to buy a home and my husband is fixated on this property in Encanto, which is an amazing piece of architecture but in a not-so-great zip code by reputation. Crime rates are less than more desirable neighborhoods, Johnson Elementary has pretty good ratings as a Magnet Science school, the area is quiet both during the day and at night (we’ve been there to check) and kept up with only a few houses scattering the hillsides–not a close knit cookie cutter community. What’s the deal with this area? My coworkers (who all live above the 8) tell me to “stay away” but apparently the gang violence has improved in the nearby area of Emerald Hills and multiple grants/projects are underway to fix up this zip code. I worry if we buy there, we may not be able to sell someday due to it’s reputation but I don’t know if that fear is validated or not. Can anyone help me get a realistic grasp of the situation?
