    Hello All,
    We have been told by management that we must cover a position in El Centro, which means driving once a week to El Centro, working and staying 2-3 days. This will go on for 2-3 months per worker, and each worker must fulfill all remaining hours at our regular job. Thus, there is nothing to sweeten the deal here. They have asked for volunteers, but as suspected NO ONE wants to do this, especially because our jobs do not involve travel. Apparently, management can do this, and assign duties as directed.

    However, we were told that there were exceptions to this rule.
    These are:
    1) Single caretakers with small children
    2) Persons with medical disabilities

    However, out of 14 workers, only 1 meets this criteria and has a documented medical disability. One is retiring in July, so I am guessing they are leaving her alone.

    They tell us that there are only 6 eligible workers, which means they have eliminated single caretakers with teenage children, caretakers with spouse with small children, and persons with spouse’s who have medical disabilities (and the workers are not on family leave act). I am guessing they did this because those noted above will surely make a stink over this.

    This doesn’t seem right to me. Why do 6 workers have to compensate for the other workers? Our jobs are all the same, and we receive similar pay.

    Does anyone have any feedback on this?

    I’d raise hell. Not because I want the others to suffer, but because your employer should use free-market incentives (bonuses, extra time off, etc.) to get someone to take on the extra duties voluntarily.

    It isn’t fair. Your absolutely right.

    But it happens all the time. 15 years ago I was on a super-crunch project… everyone else on the project was married with kids. So they all had good excuses why they couldn’t work weekends or pull all nighters. So they ended up working 50 hours a week where I was talked into working 70-80 hours per week. My boss told me, as he left for the weekend to go to soccer games with his kids, that life wasn’t fair. I ended up quiting because I was so burnt out. I had to point out to him that I would remain single and kid free if I never left work and had a chance to date and meet anyone. His jaw dropped because that never occurred to him.

    I guess this is my long winded way of saying – I agree with you that it’s not fair. But it’s also common. I’m sorry you’re being put through this.
