A friend had 2100 and 5580 in cash. She and her sister double counted each pile and everything was OK. But on the way to the bank, she carelessly added 1200+5580, so that on the deposit slip she wrote 900 less than what she gave to the teller. All the money was in 20s, BTW.
The teller took all the cash, went to a cash counting machine (which my friend couldn’t see), and then took a very long time to count the money. The teller talked to a colleague, and after some time the teller came back to the counter and told my friend: “you had made a mistake… you gave me 200 more than what you wrote on the deposit slip”.
My friend was surprised, but went ahead with the deposit. At home that night, she went through her notes and realized that she had made a mistake: 1200+5580 instead of 2100+5580. That’s a 900 difference, but the teller gave her only a 200 difference. 700 were missing!
The day after, at the branch, they told her she was wrong and asked her for proof. So it’s essentially her word against the two clerks who claimed that they each counted the money and found only 200 more than what she wrote on the slip (not 900).
She’s absolutely sure she brought 2100+5580 to the bank. Does she have any recourse? Could a security camera had captured anything? She and her sister have nearly 500K at this bank in money market accts and CDs, and also all their visa/mastercards are issued by this large bank. She absolutely has no need to steal 700 from the bank…
A security camera probably captured this, but it depends on how slick the teller was in using the cash counter and slipping the $700 into his/her pocket. Personally, I would press. Ask to see the security tapes. Although I’m not sure what the bank’s obligation is to show them to you. (That’s a good question, actually.)
