Do the events of the last few weeks seem to bring the ‘end of retirement’ into sharper focus? What I mean is that retirement is yet another baby boomer entitlement that subsequent generations will not be able to indulge in. Of course piggs in general not a statistically representative group, I’m sure many of you will be able to ‘afford to retire’.
* retirement is yet another example of the middle class overstretching themselves to have the same things they see the upper class enjoying (a la granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, etc)
* retirement seems like a ponzi scheme, or perhaps something akin to a sci-fi flick like ‘the island’ (not a very good movie btw)
* making good on govt and corporate entitlements is simply not possible. Likewise, it seems that the vast majority of self-directed retirements won’t achieve the results they are expected to.
While I don’t know how I’ll feel in 30-40 years, I don’t really hate my job that much. I’m in tech, so I’ll probably be forced out or into mgmt in the next 10 years anyway, and maybe I will hate every second of that.
A related question is, essentially, what portion of the population can be paid to do nothing? The entire FIRE sector contributes nothing to productivity. Add to that the awful ROI government gets for its payroll (see related articles on this site, for example). Further, add the growing ranks of senior citizens, and to a lesser extent the poor. What’s the tipping point? 1:5 (productive:unproductive)? 1:10 ??
