    Rather than starting a poll, I thought I’d create a thread on the basic ideas of individualism vs collectivism, and see where y’all stood on the matter. As defined in the FreeDictionary.com:

    Individualism:
    1.
    a. Belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence.
    b. Acts or an act based on this belief.
    2.
    a. A doctrine advocating freedom from government regulation in the pursuit of a person’s economic goals.
    b. A doctrine holding that the interests of the individual should take precedence over the interests of the state or social group.
    3.
    a. The quality of being an individual; individuality.
    b. An individual characteristic; a quirk.

    Collectivism:
    The principles or system of ownership and control of the means of production and distribution by the people collectively, usually under the supervision of a government.

    Where do you stand? Why?

    That was exactly how I was going to reply.

    One should determine degree of harm/good done to an individual or society (a dynamic variable, IMO) and try to weigh in favor of balance.

    Not saying it’s easy or even possible in practice, but I think it should be our goal as a society.

    Not saying it’s easy or even possible in practice, but I think it should be our goal as a society.
