I have a couple of questions I hope some of you can help me understand. How did California make it before Mello Roos? And where in the world does all the property tax dollars go?
I moved from the east coast to SD in Sep 06. I lived in an area (Main Line of Philly) that had similar prop values to where I live now (Santa Monica development in Santa Luz). However, we did not have MR in Philly. For perspective, we sold our home for over $1MM before we came to SD and our prop taxes were around $7400/yr. This is a common assessment number for the Main Line area. And by the way, in the past 5 years two schools were build for an average $50MM a pop.
The home we are living (renting) in now sold for ~$1.2MM in 04 and prop taxes with MR is +$20K/yr. Prop 13 says the tax on this home is ~$12k annually. How is it that the public schools are experiencing a revenue shortfall for building/maintaining/infrastructure and why are teachers “underpaid” with such deep property tax pockets?

I say do not lend credence to all the pretexts that are promulgated by the state. I wonder what the county tax assessor pays in property tax?
