I would think so, even with this supposed correction underway for a while now and with a six figure salary, I am still priced out of most of SD. Even though I’m fairly young my attitude on home buying is old school: If you can’t put 20% down and the monthly payment on a 30 year fixed loan exceeds 30% of your take home income, you can’t afford the house. Sure, there are “other” areas of the county you can look at if you don’t have kids, but in SD there appears to be a 300K+ premium you pay for your kids not to have to share a school with a ton of gang bangers and pregnant teens.
