I have no evidence to back up this comment but am wondering whether there might be a glut of such things coming on the market dirt cheap.
October 5, 2007 at 10:43 AM #87061NotCrankyParticipantI have no doubt. We are buying second hand stuff for the house I am STILL finishing. I just bought a bunch of office furniture from a broke broker. He was selling evrything. I got the feeling if I wanted the picture frames from his family portraits I could have them. I just took the furniture.Real nice guy though. He was very helful loading my truck and my buddies trailer.
While searching I found a lot of people in his shoes. We are buying other furniture and appliances. You know who is selling them. There seems to be a glut of shiny contractor type trucks sitting around town with for sale signs on them.October 5, 2007 at 10:55 AM #87063jennyoParticipantWe have one of these we bought new for about $3500 at a spa show 3 years ago (in 2004). So the guy should be discounting it more than $300. If I was getting rid of mine, $2000 would probably be acceptable, maybe even less if I really wanted it gone.
Plus it will cost you about $400 to get an electrician to wire it up at your house unless you already have a spot for it that is prewired.
October 5, 2007 at 11:12 AM #87064NotCrankyParticipantThanks Jennyo. I am the electrician. The add says 100 feet of cable and a $20 connection box are worth 600 bucks. Nope. I do need precisely that amount of cable though. So maybe I will offer 2k for all. I think things in good condition on craig’s list should be about 50% off…just like houses.
October 5, 2007 at 12:36 PM #87069FearfulParticipantThe secondary market for hot tubs is pretty close to zilch. Hot tubs are typically impulse buys.
Most often they are disposed of when a house is sold. The buyers of the hot tub are loath to admit their mistake. Buyers of the house don’t have the same sunk cost fallacy.
The seller of this hot tub clearly has a grossly inflated idea of its value if he thinks used wire is $6 a foot. He needs a reality check: Send him bids from a bunch of different email accounts, each offering him sub-$1,000 prices. Then, after he is conditioned that the value is minimal, offer him over $1,000 and see if he bites.
Or just keep an eye on craigslist. There will be realistic sellers coming along.
October 5, 2007 at 1:31 PM #87071patientlywaitingParticipantI agree with Fearful.
October 5, 2007 at 2:20 PM #87072NotCrankyParticipantThanks guys, I will definitely keep 1g instead of 2g in mind. In case anyone wants to know, I made a call today and found that it costs a little less that $300 to move one from Carlsbad to Jamul with a bonded and insured contractor.
So with your feedback, in theory we are looking at paying about 33% of original cost for a 2 year old Jacuzzi.EDIT:
In the unlikely scenario that anyone is indulging me on this thread, I am posting the link to a craig’s list fishing expedition I typed up. Maybe it will come up with a good deal?
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/wan/441108613.htmlOctober 5, 2007 at 6:18 PM #87119CoronitaParticipantI know people hate costco here, but. There's one for $3k shipped.
Some things I worry about getting a used hot tub
1)From a man with a family: hot tub previously with kiddy's poopie and peeie.
2)From a bachelor: hot tub used for…Think about everything you plan on doing with it….Uh, never mind.
If you do decide to buy the one from craigslist, please don't use the extra wire to hang yourself. Electrical wire tend to break when subject to human weight and we wouldn't want to see perfectly good electric wire go to waste. Oh yeah, and we love you. :),
October 5, 2007 at 6:21 PM #87121novice1027ParticipantBummer,
I just sold mine to a friend for $600. I was glad to get it out of my yard. It was like new, hardly used.
But my friend got hosed, because the charged her 1K to deliver it from Vista to Leucadia.
Guess it all comes out in the wash!October 5, 2007 at 6:25 PM #87123bsrsharmaParticipantI second FLUs feelings about used tubs. I feel they are a bit too intimate to buy used.
Besides, I think they are a luxury. Why bother if you can’t pay cash for a new one?
October 5, 2007 at 7:00 PM #87126NotCrankyParticipantFlU thanks for the support.
Do you and BSR only go to brand new hotels? Sounds kinda hypochondriac-ish
See, I am telling you guys there are advantages to being borne with nothing on a paper platter. It is funny how the same experience affects different people. After 9217 diapers a greener shade of brown is my favorite color. Hey there is a price to pay for being a “kept man”. Any grilling going on this weekend? I promise not to kill myself at your party or let my kids poop in the pool.
“Besides, I think they are a luxury. Why bother if you can’t pay cash for a new one?”
Well because my house is paid for and I am a little tight on cash. Beside the old one quit working and I am tired of eating beans to make the little bubbles.
October 5, 2007 at 7:23 PM #87128CoronitaParticipantRustico,
Actually, once upon i time, when I went to a hotel, I did bring my own sheets. I am a product of my mother's bringing, in which she is absolutely a hygene nut. To this day, I won't walk out of a bathroom without a paper towel in hand that I use to wrap the door handle when I walk out. Namely, because many people don't wash their hands when they leave the bathroom. No grilling this weekend. Need to play mr dad because is mom's weekend out.
October 5, 2007 at 7:42 PM #87130NotCrankyParticipantIt is all good. This thread is reminding me of Perry, whom I miss. He would not eat at buffets. Maybe he is posting under a new name? Is there anyone out there besides FLU and bsr that won’t eat at buffets?(Rhetorical question). Have fun with your kid(s).
October 5, 2007 at 7:49 PM #87131RicechexParticipantI rarely eat at buffets, and if I do, I get there early before the lunch or dinner rush. They’re gross. Too many people with poor hygiene and kids that aren’t taught not to stick their fingers in everything.
