This is like the scam where borrowers can “rent” someone else’s good credit by getting named as co-borrower on an existing credit line. The difference is that here the borrower pretends to be co-owner of an established bank account:

This type of scam is so closely related to the opportunistic ability to be added to an unrelated party’s well established credit lines as an authorized user to boost FICO scores. Fortunately, my understanding is that at least one of the credit bureaus will be scanning for that undeserved benefit.
