    In defense of Big 3 the main thing holding back the big three are their legacy commitments to retiree healthcare and pensions. GM and Ford earn $10-20 billion on their overseas operations.

    If the government takes off retiree pension/healthcare obligations in exchange of UAW eliminating the jobs bank program the big three will do a lot better.

    American companies without UAW style obligations have easily beat back Japanese challenges.

    Microsoft has fought Sony to a draw in game console. Cisco/Juniper have ousted Fujitsu and NEC in networking.
