If you are looking for quick shops you can walk to, good public schools, and walk to Karate, in a very friendly safe area, I would say this would be a good location for you.
The communute will be a little longer, but this is a newer area. You will have Mello Roos and HOA, but I know this area, and you would be happy.

Sky Ranch is a very nice community, but you won’t be able to walk to Karate or Shopping. This is available near by, but you would need to drive. However, it is extremely close to El Cajon, plus many people walk the streets up here regularly. It’s surprising how much walking room there is up here.
