Participant
What fun, I get to spend my time re-posting this twice in one day:

Key excerpt:
Do not try to turn any discussion, even if already political in nature, into a left-vs-right slapfest….
Come to think of it, don’t even bother starting such a discussion. There are literally thousands of websites that are solely dedicated to this kind of one-sided partisan bashing… I just don’t understand why people want to post this stuff here.
Rich – tell you what. I’ll just grab the domain “jfiquettevsdbrian.com” and you can setup up this same forum software on a host for them and let them have at it. I’ll set up a cronjob to post random inflammatory comments and they will be so busy responding and fighting each other they won’t have time to post here.

ParticipantHolding property in trust offers little benefit to me. The benefit is to my heirs should I die or be deemed incompetent.
Basically, a trust lays the framework to transfer assets from me to my heirs without going through the government at all.
Without it, the assets go through a process called probate, which is basically a scam for a govt employee to charge my wife and/or kids $10K to $100K to shuffle papers around for two years before they actually get the stuff that I will to them.
With a trust, probate is avoided. Some inheiritance tax is avoided, but not all. The real benefit is to avoid probate.
If I recall, the right kind of trust also avoids a reset of taxable value when a house is transferred to the kids.

ParticipantIn california, it is not a topic to be taken lightly.
I’m a habitual do-it-yourselfer but I paid an attorney $1300 to do this for me and I couldn’t be happier about it. This included a will, HIPA docs, incompetencey demands, life-support demands, trust, child guardianship, all the docs I need to transfer accounts and assets to the trust and probably a couple other things I forget.
Even if you do it yourself, I suggest going to one of those free workshops offered by the lawyers. They are pretty helpful. I went to these guys and their class was great:

I have since learned from others who know of the firm that I chose wisely.

ParticipantPassive solar water pre-heaters are pretty cheap. If you have the space, it could be worth doing. My dad built his own at my childhood home in Arizona.
Just run the output of the solare heaters into your regular water heater.
