Participant

As for the unions being “private” orgnaizations, the bulk of that money goes to the teachers
Without the union, then 100% of the money would go to the teachers.
You couldn’t be more wrong. Without unions, the money would go to “capitalists” who “own” the system.
Look at the difference between union and non-union jobs. It’s clear that teachers lose without unions.
No. That theory only “works” when the entity hiring labor is a capitalist corp. In this case, it is the government.
So, if the government were paying non-union teachers, any money that didn’t go to the teachers would go to the taxpayers.

I think a voucher system would help here. Let the parents decide. Give them X dollars to spend where they like on the school and teachers of their choice and let the power of millions of people making small decisions go to work. Power to the people, baby !
Exactly. Choice is good.
Unfortunately vouchers are a long shot primarily because tax payers have very little representation; in many states the vast majority of politicians represent public employee unions and not the tax payers.
If parents feel so strongly about it, they can easily send their kids to private schools or they can homeschool. There is no need to subsidize private, for-profit schools with taxpayer money.
Who said anything about private, for-profit schools?
Vouchers could pay for public schools, too. But the schools would have to be free to hire and fire teachers as needed to attract more parents to the school.
And, you conveniently ignored this question:
Why couldn’t we allow the schools choose whether to hire union or non-union teachers ?
You say that taxpayer money funding for-profit entities (private schools) would be bad. Well, unions are for-profit organizations and public money is funding them now.

ParticipantIt’s a good question, but probably a moot one. Expecting the gov to not kick the can again is foolish – it will probably be extended.
ASSUMING IT EXPIRES –
It wouldn’t change the number of distressed properties, only how those distressed properties are handled. So I don’t think it would dramatically change the housing market itself but I think it would allow us to move distressed properties through the market a little faster. It all depends on the banks. If banks choose to foreclose faster if short sales are less likely, it could bring some inventory into the market. But, I don’t understand what the banks are doing now so I’m not gonna guess what they would do if …

Participant
Those who prefer to work in a union-free environment are free to do so all day long. They can work at private schools if they don’t want to pay union dues. What’s funny is that they don’t go there. Nope, they gravitate toward the superior jobs that are (surprise!) made better because of unions.
Why couldn’t we allow the schools choose whether to hire union or non-union teachers ?

Participant
In all seriousness, I think one of the reasons for strike was the decision to base evaluation of teachers on how well the students do academically.
checked the authority on such things:It explicitly says “Expensive sandwiches” – item 63.

ParticipantI meant, help you deal w/ the city. First help you determine if it is at all possible, maybe find some loopholes. And second, walking the plan into the city to give it the the best chance of getting approved.

ParticipantI usually owner-build, though we used K-Co long ago.
K-Co is the contractor of choice here in Clairemont. Never heard one complaint about them amongst many that have used them. The founder died recently – very suddenly. Very sad.
They may not bother w/ a small CV job, though.

ParticipantFunny but true.
Would be even funnier if you had to pay to read it with the promise that reading it will make you happier.

ParticipantIf you PM me with your email address, I’ll see if I can get an acquaintance of mine to contact you who may be able to help. You might have to pay him for a couple hours of work.

ParticipantIf you want to do it the official way, I would find a planning consultant or have someone, like an architect or landscape architect to go down to the city and submit a plan.
If you want to do it the Clairemont way, just put the pad where you want it and use a nice homemade, I mean custom, set of wooden ramps.
