Participant
On the other hand, look around, how many of your main stream non-asian managers are “creative” and “good with people”. Give me a break.
Please make sure you don’t put words in my mouth. I never said “good with people”
In addition to creative, I said
“who knows how to get others to work hard”,
“to secure funding for a project”
“manage others ”
“social”
“friendly”
“persuasive”
“tactful”Those are all specific skills you don’t learn by tucking yourself in a corner.
I used the term “creative” not in reference to a managerial position, but as a nod to positions that are design-related instead of implementation-related.

ParticipantI really have no idea what you are talking about there, brian. It wasn’t me that mentioned affirmative action.
The objective requirement is – when your prospective employer calls the people you used to work with – will they say “you should hire him” or “you will be better off without him.”

Participant

I’m going to hire the guy who learned how to be social, friendly, persuasive, tactful, creative, etc.
That facts are that test scores and published results are what count most.
Only for your first couple of jobs out of school. Then, it is all about your repuation and networking skills.

You make a good point. But our world is becoming a lot more objective in the sense that we want to see certifiable results and hard numbers.
Yeah – like in sales, where you have to be able to understand people.
