May 30, 2013 at 9:50 PM in reply to: Which public schools are better: Carmel Valley or La Jolla #762325RhettParticipant
Stuck, Rhett knew Dingeman was one of the schools because he saw the name of your thread in his toolbar
Not so; it was easy to guess. We looked at an awful lot of houses in the Miramar area, and are very familiar with the school boundaries and the relative information of each.
Like the original poster, we had a *major* problem with Miramar Ranch’s bell schedule. Our problem was the reverse – the 7:30 start is just way too early for us, and we’d much prefer a 9:00 start. But, like BearishGirl said, you can always use the after hours program and just adjust (though it makes for a LONG day for your child, and that isn’t so great). In fact, one reason we do not have our child in public schools is that there is the same early start for Doyle (7:30ish), so we have her in a nearby private school.
If the OP is chasing API scores (and less face it, many people do), in 2011 Dingeman was 973 and Miramar Ranch 913. If you look at 2012, Dingeman fell to 959, and Miramar Ranch went up to 928. This really is a wash, all things considered – and in many other scenarios nobody would think twice about a school with a 928.
To address another point of the OP – you need to be careful about the renting trick. Schools that are pushed to the limit in attendance (which I believe Dingeman may be) will look into property tax records (especially for somebody recently denied for a choice transfer), and if they see you own a place nearby, they may ask some difficult questions.
Schools also have a cutoff date for guaranteed enrollment for a given year, and you’d have to check with Dingeman to see what that may be. If they are pushed to the limit, somebody coming in late might get placed in the nearest school with room – and given that Ellen Browning Scripps is also pretty full, I bet that would be (drum roll) Miramar Ranch. So wouldn’t it be ironic if you rented to get into Dingeman, only to be sent to Miramar Ranch?
RhettParticipant

IIRC, don’t you and Scarlett live in UC where your kid(s) attend public school? And are you still searching to buy a residence for your family?
Just wondering, Rhett. It’s been a long time for you guys.
Yes, but no on the public school. Would rather not share details on the rest unless Scarlet would care to do so (in other words, ask the boss 🙂 ).
As far as the OP goes, I’d like to know the parameters before I criticize them too much, but it almost sounds to me like they are in or near Miro Circle, and for some reason were deluded into thinking that they could drive down the hill to Dingeman rather than around Lake Miramar to Miramar Ranch. Very similar situation to what we were seeing when looking in that area.
Interboundary choice transfers (that is from one grade school to another when both feed the same middle and/or high schools) probably never happen. And why should they?
May 30, 2013 at 2:05 PM in reply to: Which public schools are better: Carmel Valley or La Jolla #762310RhettParticipantIf you are looking at it from purely a test score perspective, you can’t go wrong with either. Grades schools are excellent in both.
Torrey Pines probably does a little better on the high school level than La Jolla, but man is it huge (> 2600 students). I think more of the La Jolla kids end up doing private school for high school than the Carmel Valley kids, and there actually is a not so insignificant amount of choice students in La Jolla High – so it’s less of a closed community at that level than would seem at first glance.
I think that given OP’s situation, they’d be happier in Carmel Valley, perhaps up in Torrey Hills.
RhettParticipantSince this has been deleted, does anybody remember which Scripps Ranch schools were being discussed?
Sounds like somebody in Miramar Ranch’s boundaries trying to get into Dingeman.
RhettParticipant
Norv gives one last middle finger to the fans as they beat a pathetic Raiderless team thus assuring a lower draft pick. Probably no big deal, the Chargers would have traded down anyway to avoid paying more if they would have won(lost).
What am I missing here? The Chargers finished 7-9, the Raiders 4-12. Had the Raiders won, the Chargers are 6-10 and the Raiders 5-11. The result had no bearing on their relative draft position, so I’m not sure I see the Chargers losing to the Raiders comment.
On the other hand, given the log jam of teams at 7-9 and 6-10, the Chargers may very well have been 5 picks better in the draft had they lost (I’m not going to run any numbers; it is just my guess).
And no, they aren’t moving to LA. At this point, it seems that a return of the Rams is the leader in the clubhouse.
RhettParticipant

i don’t know if it’s a good idea to reach too far. As he told me when we were discussing the pros and cons of me applying for higher positions, he said, “Pa, the tallest blade of grass always gets cut first.”
Did you also look into UCI and UCSD? The GPA might be too low for those two schools, but it never hurt to try. Those are also top notch engineering school with UCSD being in the top 15 in the nation and #1 or #2 in Bio-Engineering (depending on which ranking). Those two schools are also very close to home for you. Maybe make that kind of commute to work.
s/might be/is probably/
Unless squat is very poor, or unless he kid somehow trips up the holistic admissions procedure, he would not get past the first cut. I do agree that it wouldn’t hurt to try, but it’s a pipe dream.
The average high school GPA of a freshman getting admitted to engineering at UCSD is above 4.
RhettParticipant
Um none of this because Romney lost. All this because of what the system has become. The article may have been written in support of Romney however most of the Piggs responses have nothing to do with who is president.
I was only addressing the timing of this being posted, not what was said or any of the responses.
RhettParticipantSeriously – all of this because Romney lost? Why not post the same thing last month? Or a month later? Posts like this only come from people that are shocked.
I’m trying to figure out why this wasn’t a predictable outcome to you, or why you think things would be any different if Romney had won.
RhettParticipantSounds to me like somebody has developed housing envy when doing school drop offs and pick ups.
RhettParticipant
Our price range is not very much, up to 360k.
You can buy a townhouse in Scripps Ranch for $360K? Unless you are talking about those older ones in the southwest parts of Scripps Ranch, I don’t think you could find even a 2BR townhouse for that price. Those older ones make me nervous – I’ve looked at a few and I’m always shocked that the termites have not eaten them to the ground. Way too much wood.
RhettParticipantSay hello to Marge and Norm for me. They’re good people, youbetcha.
RhettParticipant
Yes. There are also ocean view houses in Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch (all further inland than Santaluz). Still not very coastal :)
Neither Rancho Bernardo nor 4S Ranch show up in the San Diego Union Tribune real estate listings as “North County Coastal”.
I don’t think anything more than 5 miles from the coast should be called “Coastal”, but I digress.
RhettParticipantI’m curious what the statistics would be if they remove everybody’s appendix at the age of 1 month? Sure, there are risks due to surgery, but would the outweigh the risk of appendicitis that wasn’t caught soon enough? I dunno.
I’d probably have opted against doing it if I had a boy. My brother, who still lives in our “home country” and is a bit more conservative in these issues, had both of his boys circumcised because he was very concerned about the “I don’t look like Daddy” issue. Sad thing is, they botched boy #2’s circumcision, and though it wasn’t a life changer he probably looks about as much different as he would have with a foreskin. I’m too classy to have said to my brother “well, that’s why I would have been against it”.
Oh, and the original topic of this thread? What a crock of $#!t. Our health care costs are far more effected by people choosing to eat at fast food restaurants, often turning their kids into fat chunks like me by age 12. Let’s get some perspective here…

Frequent motorist in certain “flyover states.”
BG, you should fly.
I’m planning to fly to Bloomington, IN later this year to visit a cousin who lives in one of those rare liveable enclaves in those flyover states.
As somebody who grew up in Indiana, I found this comment somewhat insulting at first read. There are a lot of good people in Indiana, and for the most part I find them a hell of a lot less superficial than people around here.
With that said, however, the only places I could live in Indiana without being bored to tears are Bloomington and certain northern suburbs of Indianapolis. I probably could live around West Lafayette, only because I am a Purdue alum and could immerse myself in their sports teams and whatnot, but it really isn’t any great shakes.
And out of a high school of fewer than 700 students in my days, I’d bet that somewhere between 50-100 have been in varying levels of trouble due to meth.
