How about wars that last for years and years…on our soil?
It starts off looking like Greece.
then if we’re lucky, we look like Russia circa 1992-2002,
if we’re unlucky, we look more like the Congo or Ghana Or flip on the first two episodes of “Jungle Gold” and just pay attention to what’s happening around the scene…

ParticipantIt doesn’t matter who wins, the rabid faction of the losing party is going to snap either way.
My concern is it isn’t over.
Ohio is already babbling about absentee ballots.
Broward county, once again, has voter issues in Florida.
The Northeast has last minute voting exemptions that let people vote in the wrong jurisdiction.
In other words, it’s readily possible that the winner isn’t know until next week, the week after, or maybe even… after Thanksgiving.
Let’s hope for a surprise blow-out, one way or the other.
And duck for cover if the popular vote and Electoral college don’t line up. Not sure which side would come more unhinged.
That said, this election was a colossal disappointment.
The Supreme Court is wrong, money has completely corrupted our process. Money wasn’t used as free speech. It was used has shout down by both sides, at virtually all levels. The presidential campaign just the direct fundraising by Obama, Romney spent and raised nearly as much as it cost to do the Mars Rover. What a sad waste.
Molly Munger spent $44 million on Prop 38. Her brother, with an apparent opposite political view, spent even more on 32 and 30. Aren’t you glad they didn’t just buy Assembly people and Senators. The average spent on the “hot” legislature races is $180K. Imagine what they could have done, spending twice that per race on a candidate of their chosing…

ParticipantWhen you want to address issue of the Government systematically lying, we’ll listen.
The issue is the withholding of information, again.
Yes, they shot a handcuffed, face-down person.
And yes, they, the PD, didn’t think they needed to disclose that the person was handcuffed and face down.
Even the LA Times Editorial gets it.
“Kennedy Garcia, 23, was one of a group of suspected graffiti vandals in the process of being arrested and handcuffed by police on Oct. 12 when he reportedly took off running. The police called for backup, and two officers in the South L.A. neighborhood spotted him trying to crawl under an SUV. They dragged him out by the ankles and, although he was reportedly lying on his stomach with his hands cuffed behind his back, saw something metallic that they mistook for a gun. Both opened fire, and Kennedy was critically wounded after being shot in the back. He was not armed.”

Participant
More wrongs don’t make a right. Not to mention, if we place a 250% tariff on Chinese products, we could very easily and quickly take the wind out of their economy’s sails. The better if it’s combined with covert action to damage their government (read: Tiananmen 2.0).
Even more LOL. Let’s increase prices 300% overnight!

For instance, NYC needs a lot of food shipped in. It also needs a lot of water shipped in. The 40+ year construction of Water Tunnel #3 comes to mind…
Unless you’re living on a farm, that’s true for most of the US.
As far as the oil companies being investors, true. But it would be far better to expropriate their oil profits into submission, forcing them to either adapt (much more quickly than they are) or die. The idea should be to raise fossil fuel energy costs to the point where nascent clean tech can compete, and to use the money expropriated to fund development and roll-out of that tech.
LOL, meanwhile, China’s already realized CO2 increase from coal consumption exceeds Kyoto’s CO2 reductions by 4:1…

ParticipantI’ve seen those claims. They’re measuring direct energy consumption and not total lifecycle impact.

Or we could look at the humble coffee cup. Seems the more they look at the coffee cup, the more they question their environmental conclusions.
The household standard stoneware mug is far more damaging than paper or styrofoam.
Which is beside the point. Demonizing oil company employees, actually more correctly, energy company employeees, isn’t going to help solve the problem. Those evil “oil” companies also happen to be some of the biggest green energy investors.
People really need to think about that as they get led by the media for adopting social and economic policies.

Well it looks very much like global warming is now shouting at the top of its voice, and it still looks very much like the subject remains taboo, at least on the media.
Save the country, and the world. Treat all oil company employees, from the lowest to the highest, like the proverbial soldier returning from Vietnam in 1969. Basically, make them sorry to have been born.
ParticipantWhat if you create a contract with your child to “pay” for earned letter grades in school? Would that then be earned income?
Gifts and investments are out so you can’t go that route.

ParticipantSorry to hear of your troubles UCGal.
I’m knocking on wood that I have many more years before I come to the same situation, but know it could be any time since both sets of parents are mid-70s.
Your MIL may (or may not) actually be making rational decisions, just using different criteria. She may be placing more value on your family’s well being and independence, a desire to maximize what’s left of their quality of life, etc.
For many elderly, the issue of becoming dependent on someone, and in their view, a burden, is traumatic. Moving in with family often means a perception of loss of independence, isolation from friends, defeat and depression.
From a care standpoint, being with your family is best. At some point, each of us is going to face a transition in illnesses from prevention, to combating, to hospice.
In America, our medical establishment is extensively focused on combating. We under emphasize hospice and the non-physical natures of illness and aging.

Now, which proposition sides are carpet bombing us with expensive political ads? Unless that’s what you want vote the opposite.
No – prop 30.
Yes- prop 32.
Yes- prop 37.
No – prop 38.Insurance, three strikes, two year budget cycle, devil is in the details.
Prop 34 – End Death penalty – Yes. Cities like LA can’t repair sidewalks, but we trust them to convict and sentence people to death…
Prop 39 – Maybe Yes. Don’t like the green energy funding, which is why I suspect, one billionaire hedge fund guy is funding nearly all of the $30 million in favor. That’s the cynic in me.

Participant
Turn the unit off by throwing the breaker switch at the electrical box to stop the blower. Then turn it back on, that may fix it.
That’s what I’d do, throw the breaker, let it sit a few minutes and then turn it back on.
If that doesn’t work, call an HVAC guy.
Replacing the smart meter is just a power outage, nothing more. I really hate the new smart meters, not easy at all to see how much energy you’re using at the moment. It does have a little flashing two boxes and a arrow but not nearly as simple as watching the dial spin. The website is always 24 hours behind.
