I always had a large dog growing up on the farm in Montana. First a lab mix and then a german shepperd mix, both great dogs that took care of themselves and lived outdoor exclusively. A few years ago, my fiance decided that she wanted a dog. She works from home and wanted some company. I was against a house dog from my upbringing, but after a few years of Samson, I’m a changed man. She settled on a Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix (75/25) (9.5lbs) that she got from a breeder in Texas. So, I’ll try to attempt to answer your questions from my experience with a house dog.
1) By adoping, you are potentially saving a dog from being put down (my fiance recorded the Oprah show on dog rescues and it was an eye opener), but cons can be the baggage that they are bringing in the form of trust, obedience, etc.
If you go with a breeder, do your due diligence and find a reputable breeder that not only takes good care of the pups, but also the mothers and fathers that are breed. My fiance did her due diligence, including visiting the breeder multiple times before she found Samson.
2) & 3) You will experience some accidents. A good cure is a little “Hot Shot” available in three pack from Costco. But a better cure is buying “Puppies for Dummies” and taking all suggestions and finding out works best during the training. My fiance lived on the third floor of her place in Mission Valley, so it wasn’t convienent to get down the the designating “relief area” at all hours of the day, so she potty trained him with a litter box. I didn’t think that it would work, but it did. We use Yesterday’s News at PetSmart and it works well. Two months ago we moved downtown (we are renting…), right next to Pantoja Park, where we have a quick exit right to the grass. The only time he uses the litter box is when we are gone for a long period of time. In a typical work day, he gets taken out at ~6am, ~12pm, and ~6pm and does fine. Frequently, if we don’t take him out first thing in the morning, he runs straight to the litter box.
Samson has a little more hair than the dogs you are considering, but not by much, and he gets cold easily. If you have direct sunlight, their is a good chance that is where they will spend their afternoon (as in the picture above).
I highly suggest crate training. Samson was originally crate trained (and then somebody took a few years off of crate training him), and he is now back in the process of being crate trained again and its working, just taking some time. As the Dog Whisperer would say, be the pack leader. They will still give you the love and affection that you would like from them if you are the pack leader.

A few months ago while I was searching for a new place downtown I came across a rental that was too good to be true. I immediately expected it to be a scam as (1) it was well below market value, and (2) the required deposit was 2 1/2 months rent. What? Well, I had to inquire anyway, just to make sure, and got he following response below that I had to save for future reference, so here it is…
–Scam Email I received–
This is quite a long e-mail ,so, plese read it slowly and with attention, read it twice if you have to, i tried to explain the best as i could my proposal and things to be as clear as possible. So, i am having second thoughts, i am not feeling comfortable just sending you the keys, sorry, nothing personal. I have noone there to show you the apartment because my parents are in France since i was 24 and my best friend is out of state.
I’ve contacted a company named ReMax. Their website is http://www.remax.com. They are a well known company all over the world, they have offices all over the world, they have an office in Athens, too. So, i went to their office in Athens and i told them that i have an apartment in San Diego and i want to rent it and they told me that they have a service i can use, i will describe it below. I accepted it, paid the fees and now all is needed is a possible tenant.
So, here is how it goes: first you must agree using the company, then I will contact the ReMax company and let them know you agreed using them, then they will send you an e-mail with all the instructions about how to proceed with the transaction, you then must send the money to the company, they’ll put the money in their trust account, then i have to send you the keys, your money will be held there until after viewing, along with the keys i will fedex the proof of ownership and a leasing contract (it’s a normal, standard contract), i will use FedEx-overnight and will provide the tracking number to you and to ReMax, you will have 5 days to go and see the apartment, if you decide to rent it you have to sign the lease, fedex-overnight it to me–keep a copy for yourself, notify ReMax that you accepted the apartment and they will release the money to me, if you dislike the apartment you have to notify ReMax and they will fully refund you, when you have the money in hands you will have to FedEx me the keys and provide me the tracking # (i pay the fees), you will also have to provide the tracking # to ReMax so they can track it too, when i receive the keys i will notify ReMax that i received it and the transaction is ended. The next step is to give me the OK to start this up with them and they’ll contact you. Giving the circumstances i am sure you understand that this is the best way to handle the transaction.
I am sure you’re asking yourself why would you deposit any money before seeing the apartment, but, again, under the circumstances this is the best way. Anyway, your money will be safe with ReMax and will be refunded if you decide not to rent the apartment.
I do not want to use a ReMax agent to show you the apartment or to whom you could give the money to because will involve realtor/broker fees and the fees are $1,600 which is huge. The service i’ve proposed above is much cheaper and i’ve paid the fees already.
Let me know your decision. Let me know please what you decide. E-mail me ASAP.
Thank you

ParticipantI just concluded my latest jury service this week. I ended up serving without stepping a foot into the courthouse. I had originally been called to show up back in January, but I reschedule to June (ability to reschedule six months later) since our company offices were moving downtown from Mira Mesa and figured it would be easy to serve my time.
Two weeks ago I looked up my schedule online and realized I wouldn’t be in town the week I reschedule as I am getting married out of state, and then a honeymoon, and then starting up my EMBA program at the end of July. So, I call up the courthouse, explained my situation, and amazingly, the lady that I spoke to was a delight. After congratulating me on my upcoming wedding, she then suggested the five day jury duty service where I would call in five days after 5pm and be instructed to whether or not to come into the courthouse. Well, she suggested Memorial Day weekend where there are fewer court cases and one less business day. So, I called in Thursday night, Monday night, Tuesday night, and Wednesday night. Each night the recording said that I did not need to report and the final message was thanking me for my service.
This strategy may work for others if you can delay to a holiday weekend and then call in and ask for the dial in jury duty service.
