Actually I met 30 scientists with MS and PhDs in my seminar for job placement who were layed off last week from Neurocrine. Most are Chinese and so if they can muster good communication skills, they should fine work. But having a PhD in Biochem and focused on one tiny area of work is tough for such a niche if all you did for 10 years was work on a sleep drug product that got cancelled by the FDA.

I would die of boredom even if I lived in a huge house. Anyways maybe I should look into one of those realtor actor jobs after a layoff from my tech job here in San Diego. Man I dont see a lot of new jobs in technology here in San Diego!
mixxalotParticipantFunny I just got layed off from my job yesterday at Claritas. I wonder how people can afford housing prices with all the mass layoffs and cuts in San Diego employers? At least my apartment is a lot cheaper than a mortgage payment!
mixxalotParticipantYeah its funny because old Chowderhead spouts his fat mouth off constantly on how he gives these fancy schmancy talks on real estate like he is some kind of guru. It would be hilarious when prices crash to have him censored or put down on the air and then he would have to eat his words for breakfast. Sorry not everyone has to live in San Diego. Its a nice place but so is Rio de Janiero and the South Pacific which cost a lot less to retire than San Diego.
mixxalotParticipantYeah and they need to fire that yucky pig George Chowderhead aka Chamberlain from KOGO AM 650! Man that guy is a jerk ! Arrogant as hell and wish they would rope his butt off the air.
mixxalotParticipantI am leaning toward UTC area off Genesee since its very convenient and minutes from work off the 5 North and 805 North to Mira Mesa exit by work. Only problem is that apartments and condos are very expensive in UTC for some odd reason. Anyways my lease is up in late November so I have some time to plan this one out. I will not mention my BK unless I have to do credit report.
mixxalotParticipantI love Solana Beach its a nice area and close to work. I get flex hours so it would help with traffic. I will look for a small flat in the area. Now my challenge is that while I make six figures, I was out of work last year and did a bankruptcy. Other than that I have stashed cash away and kept my credit clean since after the BK. Any way to convince condo owner to rent in spite of a past BK?
mixxalotParticipantThanks! I just want to be close to the Tech Center where I work in Sorrento Valley to save on gas and commute. I will check these places out. I am looking 1100-1500 to save.
mixxalotParticipantThanks for the wise advice. Thats exactly what I am doing right now. I invest in my work 401k and also in CDs and money market funds. I am keeping debt as low as possible and costs down. Rents are high like my 1 bedroom apartment costs me 1,000 per month in Point Loma but its high everywhere now all over in San Diego county. Still cheaper than a 3-4k mortgage for a tiny 1-2 bedroom condo so not missing much right now. Even with tax breaks not worth it since prices are falling already. I see a lot of homes in Ocean Beach with reduced price signs that have been on market for 5+ months and cannot sell for the ridiculous prices. Example was a 3 bedroom 1 bath 900 square foot home that was priced at 640k. I would never pay that much for a tiny home.
mixxalotParticipantYou gotta be F@$$#%$! kidding me! 780K for this dump! What a ripoff! The bank will take the home back unless a sucker pays the price.
mixxalotParticipantThanks, great posts everyone!
I think that I will park my cash then in money market and growth funds to ride this storm out. Renting an apartment does suck but its better than losing money in the long run. At least, I do not have to mow a lawn or do maintenance work.
I hope that the real estate market in overpriced San Diego and southern California crashes and burns! Then we can laugh at idiots like George Chamber-chowderhead on KOGO and throw eggs (metaphorically speaking) on the scummy realtors and scam artists who are little better than used car and insurance sales people and lawyers.
I want people to go back to an honest system of living and not one of predatory profiteering.
mixxalotParticipantTrend for smaller homes and single people.
I agree. Personally I could get by with a nice 2 bedroom/2bath home as long as a decent size garage and yard are available. The problem in San Diego with homes that I see is tiny or non-existent garages and no yard. For me, I would prefer a smaller home with a medium yard and large garage. But I dont want to spend half a million dollars for a small home either. Personally, homes should cost at most 200k unless the place is an estate. I wonder if San Diego homes will ever go down that low. I still do not understand how people can afford to shell out 4-8k a month for a mortgage. Jobs don’t pay well in San Diego for the real estate costs.
mixxalotParticipantI agree for the most part that buying a used car usually is a better deal. In my case, I bought a 1996 BMW 328is with 54k miles several years ago for 14k and have not had to do too much to keep it running well. Luxury cars depreciate like crazy and are a better deal if you find one that has been well cared for with low mileage. Rich people dont really care about losing money on depreciation with cars from what I see. Just need a good mechanic and used car warranty and carfax report to be extra careful on used luxury and sports cars.
For me, I am waiting for all the fools to lose money on homes so they dump their expensive Mercedes and Porsches on the market so that I can score me a nice Benz for low price with cash. I would not mind having a nice 2 year old Mercedes CLK55 AMG or CL55 Benz to cruise around town for 30k instead of the 100k sticker the rich bastard wasted on the ride.
mixxalotParticipantYeah, I work in technology field and the jobs pay low for cost of living. I see plenty of tech jobs but due to sky high gas prices and rent/real estate may explain why people can earn same salary in Texas or Florida and make their dollars go a lot farther. I wonder why employers are so cheap in San Diego?
Dont they realize it costs a small fortune to make ends meet in this city?
As for Qualcomm, they suck. I had an interview and they are the lowest paying company in San Diego. They hire a lot of folks from India on H-1B visas and pay them 50-60k for an engineering job that most employers would gladly pay an engineer 100k in most places. Thats why Qualcomm cannot find people to move here to San Diego. 50k does not go far enough in America’s so called finest city. Heck even San Francisco pays better than San Diego for same cost of living.
