ParticipantI disagree about engineer salaries as well. I know several licensed P.E. civil and electrical engineers who make about 100k a year with a decade of experience. Unless the engineer is a VP or senior level manager, he/she will not be making anywhere close to 150k in San Diego. I know because I see job salary postings all the time on engineer/technical boards. So where are you getting your incorrect salary details from? And yes, San Diego real estate still has a LONG way to drop before professionals can afford a decent home here compared to most places in the USA. Heck, even places in Florida are way cheaper for beach property. In spite of hurricanes, bugs, snakes and humidity, one can get ocean front property in Florida for half cost of San Diego coastal property.

ParticipantSanta Monica and Malibu
Are beautiful places and would love to be able to afford a small home with ocean view there. More nightlife than San Diego and better for a single guy than here in “Man-Diego” where ratio is 2:1 men to women. LA has more single women than men so I like to live in city with great nightlife and beach town. Miami looks good as well except for those darn hurricanes.

ParticipantTrue but 99% of tech IT jobs are in the Sorrento Valley/Mira Mesa area.
For me, only reason why I even want to buy in Point Loma is because I work as a consultant and travel to the airport each week. I don’t want an hour drive to the airport. Just sucks that Point Loma is hella overpriced and expensive. I will see what happens in next 1-2 years.

ParticipantNorCal versus SoCal
As someone who spent 20 years living in northern California (SF/Santa Clara/Sacramento) and few years in San Diego, I much prefer southern California over Norcal as a single guy. San Diego and OC have the fantastic weather and yes lot of traffic and people but not as crowded as bay area.
But both are expensive to buy real estate (except Sacramento) so not sure if I will stay in San Diego long term or not- if prices drop another 30% then I can afford a place, else will consider Sacramento, Austin, Boulder, Miami and Raleigh as possible options for buying primary residence. But with lenders wanting solid 2 year employment history at one company, I have couple years to worry about it.
