walterwhite, I am glad we already bought too!
Wow, I didn’t realize that it was happening in so many other places..

lpjohnsoParticipantYes and yes! I know there are a lot of cultural happenings, but unfortunately I have yet to partake. The college is 1-2 miles away from the Discovery Hills neighborhood depending where you are. Leave the neighborhood, and go south on Craven Drive until it dead ends at the college. It’s super easy, safe and direct.
lpjohnsoParticipantToday in the North County Times:
“Fewer Houses on the Market Ignite Bidding Wars Among Buyers” http://www.nctimes.com/blogsnew/business/realside/housing-fewer-houses-on-market-ignite-bidding-wars-among-buyers/article_1a5bc3e5-9848-5a51-8591-b5382c5d33ca.htmllpjohnsoParticipantCA Renter and svelte, thank you so, so much for your kind words! We are so grateful, proud and happy to be San Marcos homeowners! I really appreciate all of the great recommendations for local eateries! I can not wait to try them all out! sdrealtor, that’s a very sweet story!
lpjohnsoParticipantsdrealtor, thanks so much! And especially thanks for your help during our confusion over the past couple of years! You were always so kind to lend your help and advice.
I agree with you about Phil’s! However, I haven’t tried the butcher shop, but I will now! Thanks!
lpjohnsoParticipantsvelte, the new homestead in San Marcos is wonderful! We are all settled in after the remodel and we could not be happier! It took over 5 months to close on the short sale, but we are so glad we did it! $330,000 (+$40,000 for the remodel) for a 1500 square feet house that is 10 minutes from the beach? We never thought we would see the day. 🙂
Discovery Hills is proving to be the perfect neighborhood for us and our young sons. The schools are great, the neighborhood is safe and we love the walking trails and the neighborhood parks and Discovery Lake. We are so grateful to be here. We looked for years in Encinitas and Carlsbad (where we grew up), and finally faced the fact that we could not afford what we wanted there. San Marcos is better than we ever imagined. The marine layer rarely reaches us! The town is not what is was 20 years ago. There are so many restaurants, shopping, new high school being built, great colleges, and the city is beginning development on the new downtown (the Creek District) and the plans look unbelievable. I think we are going to be here a very, very long time!
Thanks so much for asking, svelte! I hope all is well with you! And thanks to all of the piggs for all of the great information over the years!
I posted some pics of the remodel on houzz.com. All of the pics are on the right side under “Honeysuckle House”.

lpjohnsoParticipantYup, old Encinitas. 🙂
lpjohnsoParticipantlpjohnsoParticipantCongratulations! We just bought too! Absolutely no regrets!
lpjohnsoParticipantI can definitely relate with your wife! My husband and I are beyond excited about moving to San Marcos and can not wait to raise our young boys there. It has become a real gem and just continues to get better and better. Thanks so much for your encouragement and kind words!
lpjohnsoParticipantsvelte, to clear things up, my husband and I have been under contract on the same short sale in Discovery Hills since the first week of June. During the wait for the short sale approval I got cold feet and convinced myself that it may be better if we just continue to rent. If we moved to another rental we would want to live in Encinitas or Cardiff where my husband and I grew up. We can not afford to buy what we want there, so we would have to resign ourselves to renting long term.
The same house that we are in escrow on for $330,000 in Discovery Hills would be almost double that 10 miles away in Encinitas.
Since then, my cold feet have warmed up and the short sale and our loan were finally approved and we are due to close in a couple of weeks.
Sorry to confuse you or anyone else with my inconsistent posts!
lpjohnsoParticipantMy husband and I love SEH. We don’t live there, we live close in Carlsbad, but our oldest goes to the preschool there and we have long debated if we should buy there. We finally decided not to because of the mello-roos and HOAs. Add those on to the payment and it becomes unaffordable for us. We toured Altaire and thought the houses and the views were great. We were not looking seriously because we can’t afford them, but we had no idea there were no mello-roos and such low HOAs. That’s amazing and if we could afford the neighborhood I am sure we would seriously consider buying.
We love new construction. However, due to budget we are actually in escrow on a short sale in Discovery Hills and we will have lots of work to do. Also, FYI my husband works at Scripps in La Jolla so he knows all about the commute. He says he has some co-workers who live in SEH too and they all say it’s not so bad.
Best of luck to you!
lpjohnsoParticipantI’m guilty of loving http://www.houzz.com too.
lpjohnsoParticipantHa! I am on my laptop with HGTV on in the background. Damn, I’ve had “HGTV Syndrome” for many years. Before HGTV I could care less about laminate vs granite. It has definitely cost me money and has made me think that I deserve more than what I have, when I actually don’t deserve anything! Good post and thanks for diagnosing my illness!
