ParticipantThank you, Rustico. I will continue to endure my pain (/end exaggeration) I’ll just keep checking rents, otherwise just stay put. Not a priority. My ultimate goal is the house.
I mean to add, as far as “play” money, I just got an email from a friend doing the MS walk in Big Bear. Nice to have a little extra to contribute toward that cause. This is what I mean. I have an aversion to overpaying on a house, but a greater aversion overpaying on rent. It’s not b/c I’m cheap. There are more important or things I value more that I prefer to spend my hard-earned money on. And a home is very important to me.
Still, peace of mind is of greater importance. If I wanted to gamble or be overextended, I could’ve done a subprime loan and be FB now, albeit, probably living rent free til the sheriffs come π
Making right decisions don’t always seem smart in hindsight.

ParticipantBugs – it’s not just money. I could certainly “afford” more. But that will cut into what I like to set aside for savings (more money to put down on a house besides what I got already) Cut into play money for the little things I indulge in, a couple of dinners out or a weekend trip, which isn’t major. I cut corners and although liberal in many ways, quite financially conservative.
Paying more for rent is taking away from the ultimate goal, which is getting the house I really want, and cutting into lifestyle, if you can call it that, since I’m not a major consumer. But everything is relative. I don’t need the latest and greatest, but still have some nice things, just not abusive or excessive. If I want to send my mom back East flowers for Mother’s Day, I don’t want to have to think twice about that. That’s what I mean.
Everyone has a certain budget, but like most Piggs, we try to stay close to within our means and not overextend. I could, but I would not be comfortable, maybe have to cut corners somewhere else, or dip into savings, etc. Not worth it for a rental.

ParticipantI’m looking in nicer areas along the central coast and I have not really noticed rents come down at all. The place I was renting for the past 3 years in Rennaissance was due to increase to 1850 for a 2/2. I moved, found a cheaper place w/garage, but not nearly as new and nice, for 1700. Found out the unit I left got rented for 2250!!! WTF. So not worth it, no matter how nice, for an apartment w/no garage. Looking to maybe find a nicer, cheaper place, but it’s not happening. Don’t really like this place, but I have a limit how much I want to spend on rent.
