Thanks, Blogstar. I’ll see if that’s an option of just getting that section done.
Otherwise, maybe if there’s anyone else that knows about getting a variance, would love the info.
jpinpbParticipantWe’ve also somewhat checked the termperature of improving the alley. There’s less than a handful of houses that have alley access at present. So most of the homeowners have no interest in seeing the alley improved. Last time someone expressed having it done was tens of years before us and no one wanted to pay the extra taxes to do it. I figured we’d be looking at the same scenario.
jpinpbParticipantYes. I know that is an option.
Neighbors are practically the head of neighborhood watch. Verrry nosy.
Plus I hear that if you “illegally” rent out a unit and you’ve got a smart tenant, that tenant can squat and demand rent payment that’s been paid back to him, can sue for illegally renting the unit to him/her.
So we kinda would like to do it right. We figure, rent til mom is ready to move in. She still has to sell her place in NJ. Could be a while.
jpinpbParticipantIdeally a studio apartment/granny flat for mom/in-laws w/a kitchen. I checked into it and it wouldn’t be a problem if we had an improved alley. But it’s a dirt alley and we were told that because it is unfinished, parking, etc, that we could not do the studio apartment.
I spoke w/CAR about it and she mentioned obtaining a variance perhaps. But I have no idea. So I’m seeking advice from the experts. π

Does anyone have any evidence to show that privatization will lead to more value for money or better jobs?
I think I read somewhere that corporate profits are at a 50-year high, while unemployment is also at a 50-year high.

She was lucky enough to have gotten in many, many years ago before the huge increase in tuition. She has been looking for work for over a year and is being told she is overqualified. Luckily for her, her loans are paid off.
This is a tough economy and I feel for students trying to improve their lives by getting an overpriced education that will not assure them a job to pay off the loans.

My brother has a master’s degree in international business and was looking for work for 2 years. Said the hardest job he ever had was looking for work. Demoralizing to the ego. And all the while, he has student loans to pay.
I would not be so quick to condemn them. Different times for them now. My cousin has been doing IT work for a good long time. I wouldn’t consider it grunt work. He has taken a huge pay cut and every day worries about his job being sent overseas.
Come on, flu. I expect better of you and I hope you are kidding. Getting a degree in these times does not guarantee a job, much less a job that will pay for the cost of the degree.

Just b/c it was w/in policy to do, does NOT justify doing it. Add a little common sense in there. There is no justification for pepper-spraying them while they are just sitting peacefully. Period. The Chancellor should have resigned. Go to the top. The buck stops there.
jpinpbParticipantHaven’t been visiting Piggington in a very long time. Some things just never change.
In any case, congrats Matt on your purchase. Hope it all works out and you enjoy it. At least you will be relieved in not having to look any more.
August 2, 2012 at 9:14 AM in reply to: UC Police Officer pepper spraying Occupy Protesters acted reasonably. #749374jpinpbParticipantWhat is sad is he acted w/in the policies that they had at the school. But at the same time, they were peaceful protestors sitting on the floor. How could officers feel threatened by that? There is this little thing called First Amendment rights which allows people to peacefully assemble. It would be one thing if there was a riot. Then it would be an unlawful assembly. Sitting on the floor does not justify being pepper sprayed. It was wrong.
jpinpbParticipantWow. It sure does need a lot of work. No kidding. But this place not only has a great ocean/bay view, it has a pretty big lot that backs a canyon w/no one behind you. But I agree w/you that it is overpriced. JMO.
Do you know about possible future inventory in that area? Any NODs on any places in the vicinity?
jpinpbParticipant
Good point about not losing things down the drain. (But you can still wash your wedding ring down the drain…don’t ask me how I know.)
Mr. jpinpb had to take apart some plumbing in our old place to get my ring. Oh, I never heard the end of that. Very happy w/my sink. As I said, anything on the counter won’t accidentally fall or slip in the sink ever again.
