Will be interesting to track this as it updates.
HobieParticipantHigh school kid developed this Covid-19 aggregator site. Simple, well done. Good for him!
HobieParticipantTeachers, govn’t workers that are now not working are still getting paid at normal salary.
Private industry is required to shut down. We will be taking a hit, but not taxpayer funded school staff?? Hmm.
HobieParticipantIf Nevada could ever get a high speed train from LA to Vegas that would be a game changer, methinks.
It is interesting the cruises have survived legionnaires disease, sexual abuses by crew and still attracted customers.

Then you ask yourself this:* why the lock downs in China, Korea, Iran, Italy, etc
* why the travel bans?
* why trump declared a national emergency? (and please don’t tell me he was forced into action by the MSM).* 1629 cases, 41 deaths – how many tested? Yeah, let’s not test the people, if they can’t verify they’re infected with virus therefore the virus is not spreading and killing.
1. Yes, this is a new strain so yes, concern in necessary. Limiting spread by limiting exposure is also necessary.
2. Inducing panic through lousy regression modeling is wrong.
3. Testing 1. Docs already say, don’t test unless you are presenting symptoms. Limited test kits due to brand new virus and not readily available.
4. Testing 2. Here is a parallel to support above. A lot can be determined by a single blood sample. Do they currently test for every possible thing when you give a sample. Answer:no.
5. I don’t know all of the nuances and ramifications when a national emergency is called. I suspect it has something to do with money too. ie. you can cancel a trip without incurring last minute cancellation fees, etc.
I think this may be the case re timing of schools closing (possibly contributing to the beginning of the panic stage) is that when governor declared emergency, state funds schools (pensions) irrespective to the ADA ( average daily attendance).
Enough for now.

flu:45 million sick, 61K deaths
corona: 70-100 million sick, 700K – 1 million deaths
This is what I mean. Panic inducing numbers.
Real Facts:
Covid-19
1629 cases, 41 deathsFlu
36-55 million cases, 22-55,000 deathshttps://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html#epi-curve

HobieParticipant“… the case-fatality ratio. This sounds simple: it’s the proportion of infected people who die. But working it out is much trickier than it looks. “The non-specialists do this all the time and they always get it wrong,” Edmunds says. “If you just divide the total numbers of deaths by the total numbers of cases, you’re going to get the wrong answer.”…”
My point again for some of you: Wapo, cnn, nyt, may not be the best source of good information.
HobieParticipant

Thanks for the doom and gloom, double “d”
lol. inspired by flu, an and real, I was messing around with my username and now I can’t have it back.
Back to the topic. Why don’t you share what’s your narrative is if you disagreed with others’?
He already has. He thinks coronavirus is no worse than the common flu. See his previous posts in this thread.
Close. I am more concerned about the press inflaming everyone. Actual deaths should drive the amount of induced panic.
There is that word again: Narrative!!
HobieParticipantThanks for the doom and gloom, double “d”
HobieParticipantThe word “narrative” needs to be removed from our language.
HobieParticipant
Have you heard of the Quarantini ?
We’ll probably see a spike in births 9mo from now too. ha
HobieParticipantCDC is recommending schools stay closed for 14 days. This is the approx incubation time. But with last weeks sudden rise in infections I’m guessing they will restart the 14 day clock to next week. So 3 weeks from next Mon 3/16/20.
Some school districts are already doing this be moving spring break up to give them 3 weeks of closure.
I’ll bet schools will resume 4/6.. ..unless we are all dropping like flies.

HobieParticipantMammoth Mountain just closed. I was expecting to see ads from local Big Bear ski resorts pitching now. With schools closing and current storms– a late business bonanza! We’ll see…
Another thing the press is capitalizing on is the image of coronavirus itself. The scanning electron mictrosope photography of a very sinister looking ball with red satellites is a menacing image. Ever see any photos of other viruses in the news. Not me. Other than a slide with cells
Glad to see the surgeon general finally has surfaced. He said,”..No more bickering, no more partisanship, no more criticism or finger pointing,..”
It is interesting and telling that the press has turned to slamming him now.
HobieParticipantHigh school kids are prepping for AP tests in May now. With Calif schools closing I wonder how the scores will fare against those states that have not closed.
Rise in Kaplin type specific study on-line coarses.
Again, this might be the turning point for on-line education vs. in person university classrooms.
