Before we get carried away on jumping on the Toyota pedal recall….Two things that I found interesting:
The big picture is that the people are ignoring the biggest cause of foul play in this country. You thinking stupid towel-heads with fan-belts? No those monsters can’t hold a candle to real killers. DUI deaths in USA are over 11,000 per year. Ford Exploder tires and Toyota accelerator deaths are << 100 a year. That said, can you really say that Toyota clearly fixed this problem in 2008?? OR called everyone who reported incident a F*** moron? Toyota may have had honor at one time, but they may have learned some fine American PR traits: deceitful, deceptive, delusive, guileful, mendacious, misleading, misrepresenting, misstating, perfidious, prevaricating, unreliable, untruthful, and just plain WRONG. http://www.motorauthority.com/blog/1023879_toyota-denies-unintended-acceleration-issues-on-tacoma

equalizerParticipant
I’m starting to think we are in a Union bubble right now. This is along similar lines of an earlier post I made – regarding the next “down” event being in the govt sector.
Unfortunately, the only way to buy into this bubble is to send your tax money to local governments. Or join a union which supplies labor to local government.
This idea is heaviliy influenced by Mish’s recent rants on unions and pensions. The issue seems to be heating up. Wages and pension benefits are just too high with respect to fundamentals (current labor markets) and and the local governments can’t afford them any more. Something is going to break.
I just can’t see the labor market / tax base supporting such high-priced labor much longer.
The bubble bursts when governments start to declare bankrupcy in order to escape union contractual agreements.
Mish is only person (that I saw) that addressed how to balance the CA budget a few years ago.
Here’s a good article that addresses your concerns:

“Immovable unions about to hit irresistible budget crunch”January 6, 2010 at 9:30 PM in reply to: More land, lowering costs, where would you move here in the West? #499727equalizerParticipant
At worst, it’s probably costing you $5,000.00 more per year to live in San Diego than it would cost to live in a less desirable place. Take a deep breath and relax. Don’t leave. Careful what you wish for.
Please look at this home in suburban Detroit 12 1/2 mile. Good school district, nice home, lot. The price for 4 beds, 2.5 baths, 1,800 sq ft (with half basement) is listed at 90K, probably a short sale, but comparables have sold for just a little higher. If they haven’t let the Eminem crowd move over from 8 mile, not a bad place if you have a job, telecommuting etc. Airport is 30 miles away, but heard its a ghost town. Most people in SoCal pay that much for a down payment or for two cars. With 20% down, payment is $400+Taxes+expenses($400), and I would assume lower costs for childcare. etc. I think it may add up to more than $5000 per year, but I’m sure someone will double check. This advice is only for those who are priced out of a 911.BTW, I lived in this house in the 80’s (probably paid same as current price), very decent place for a family. I was lazy and mowed the lawn every two week on this oversized lot that extended 75% back to neighbors lot. It took 4 hours and I would empty bag 25-30 times! “mmm sweet summertime summertime”
