Participant

but prison guards (and cops, in general) have one of the toughest jobs out there.
Tough has nothing to do with pay. It’s supply and demand.
Fruit pickers have tough jobs. But the state doesn’t pay them high wages.
If we want good schools, we need to cut back elsewhere or raise taxes. I don’t believe the voters want higher taxes.
But I so see the school bond issues getting passed. That’s because parents are selfish and want to pass the cost of their children’s education onto future generations. We can’t do that forever. One day, there won’t be enough money to pay back the debt (unfortunately, I don’t know when that day will be).
Parents wanting good education for kids = selfish? I disagree.

Participant
prison guard and teacher are very similar lines of work. I think most normal people would not be happy working in a prison. Or a school…anywhere the servced population is compelled by the force of law to be is going to be a bad place for the soul..
If a kid doesn’t go to school, where do you think he/she will end up? Much higher chance of going to prison…

I read CA by law can’t cut a lot of the services it provides. Think I heard on radio. It obviously can’t cut police/jail-guards too much. Can’t cut pension to state employees which is contractual agreement. What are the other ways to cut spending?
Legalize drugs that people consume anyway. That would not only save a lot of police money but raise money in taxes.
Localities can declare bankruptcy and renegotiate employment contracts. The City of San Diego should do that.
Close the gym at a school in Carmel Valley because of lack of maintenance funds and the parents will be on TV wanting more taxes in no time.
Awesome ideas! NOT…
