ParticipantI kinda sorta agree with BobS on this one. IF you are dead set on buying property at some point AND you were dead set on using that HELOC money anyway, then paying a net 3% to keep it available isn’t a bad idea. After all, if prices are falling 10%-15% annually, then a 3% fee to retain your liquidity isn’t that bad a deal, right?

ParticipantOk, dave, I don’t even want to get started with you…
Then don’t.
…but, alas, I can’t help myself.
That sounds about right. You have no discipline.
my opinion of you may be changing
Don’t waste your time.
I won’t take the bait and engage you in a religious discussion just as I don’t wrestle with pigs in the mud. (Everyone ends up dirty but the pig enjoys it.) Besides, if your other posts are any indication, your views on religion are most likely simplistic, naive, and uninformed, so from my point of view there’s really no upside for me in discussing it with you.

ParticipantMarion, I hate to disappoint you but my charitable contributions in any given year are probably greater than yours over a given decade… or two. Does that make me a “caring, giving person”? I don’t know and don’t care. I do it because I enjoy it. It’s a purely selfish act on my part. Like most everything else in my life, if I don’t enjoy it, I don’t bother with it.
The particular charity for which I often end up at the Food4Less in Chula Vista – just to complete the picture – is the Eudist Home for Girls in Tijuana, which provides shelter, support and education for abused and homeless girls. Although I don’t like the idea that these girls are being inculcated into the Catholic tradition, the trade-off (abuse and homelessness) is a reasonable one. That the sisters don’t see the irony in their beloved, caring “God” not providing for these kids in the first place is, well, rich. But that’s another issue.

ParticipantMarion, apparently you CAN’T comprehend…
My adventures to Food4Less are related to a charity I’m involved with. I didn’t want to explain, but since you had to dig… there, I said it. I’ll leave it to you to figure out how that fits in with your view that I guard my wallet like its Fort Knox. And, no, I have no problem whatsoever with bagging my own groceries. For what it’s worth, it’s standard operating procedure in much of Europe. I spent about 6 months (each) in London and Oslo about 12 years back and don’t remember anyone bagging my groceries for me. And, lo and behold, it didn’t bother me one whit.
