Now I know why we rent, and why we’ve been very long-time, bubble-sitting bears. π
Personally, I’d move to Kansas before paying 50% of our take-home pay on housing. IMHO, keeping housing costs low is the #1 way to keep yourself out of debt — especially in California.
We like to have a life outside of housing, and stay out of debt. The only way to do that with $100K income is to keep **total** housing expenses well under 35% of gross income (PITI, any HOAs & Mello-Roos, and repairs/maintenance). Preferably, it would be below 30%, and who knows what it should be if they continue to allow inflation to run like it is — which leaves even less money for housing.
BTW, I’ve noticed about 40% (or more) of the posters on Ben’s blog are female. It’s a myth that only men are able to see bubbles, and that females “need” to nest. Many of us had to convince our husbands to sell/rent.

CA renterParticipantThank you very much for the compliment, Nostradamus. Just wanted to point out that we all come into this debate with different perspectives, life experiences and information.
Most of all, I just believe that we all need to be completely honest with our dates about our beliefs and expectations, right from the start. As long as each party consents to an agreement of sorts, I have no problem with any choices people might decide to make.
It’s certainly been an interesting and insightful thread. Best wishes to all here, and I sincerely hope everyone finds happiness in their respective choices.

a woman’s greatest assets (where men are concerned) are youth, beauty and an ability to procreate

If only it were true. I’d be married to a young, beautiful, fertile idiot and have a house full of idiot children but hey, they’d be pretty.Consider what most men leave their wives for (younger, more beautiful women who are in their “prime” years for child-bearing).
While it does happen in very rare instances, most men do not cheat with or leave their wives for older, less attractive, more intelligent women.
Witness what Eliot Spitzer cheated with. His wife is the essense of an accomplished, intelligent, beautiful (certainly very attractive for her age) woman, but she has to worry about a threat not only from younger, more attractive women — but the women are literally whores as well! Guess the wanna-be rapper/models are more intelligent and accomplished than his wife??
