It is better NOT to go to college (or go to a much cheaper college or nearly “free” ROP job training program) than to take out a student loan which will ruin your life right out of the gate, just as you’re trying to start it. I don’t believe in them.
Disagree with this sentiment. Whether or not to take on student debt depends on one’s financial situation and direction in life.
if one is smart about this decision, like many other financial decisions, it can be quite beneficial.bobby
Participantare those even out yet?
I would not track a 991.2 either. Expensive if crashed. I love nice car but hate a steep depreciation curve. Rather buy a little used and suffer less depreciation.bobby
Participant991? or 991.2? you mean..
bobby
ParticipantI know what you mean about a “track” car that doesn’t get used at the track due to the car’s cost.
My own experience is the car is still quite fun when used 6-7/10 on the street. The experience is really special each time you get behind the wheel. The way the car shakes, the sharp response, the shiny paint, the exhaust note, etc, make the drive quite fun – even when not at the track.
If you can swing it, get it. Not many car quite like the GT4.bobby
ParticipantI daily drive an S2k. Fun car. Amazing gear box. Had it for 15 years and went through 4 other cars but still kept the S2k.
only draw back is twitchy. Has tendency to swap ends if not careful.
BTW, it’s next to impossible get a GT4 for MSRP. Most dealers are asking $15K+ premium on top due to availability.bobby
Participantdoes the “CV” in your name stand for curriculum vitae?
(sorry can’t resist)
🙂bobby
Participantcontrary opinion.
since you will track the car, it will get rock chip, possibly small/large dents. insurance may not cover damages occurred on tracks.
consider an used Miata (there’s a large online presence of miata racers and support) and use spared funds for consumables and safety equipments.bobby

You guys can +n all you want but without any details of the job you are providing no value.
…
…All you guys have confirmed is, yes it is theoretically possible to get that salary. If that is true, how about listing specific companies and job descriptions?
it’s pretty easy to find an engineer make over $175K and his job description. I can think of one guy off the top of my head.

I met the guy at cars/coffee – engineer. Don’t know his exact detail of his income but he buys several $million+ cars. Not parental money – his money.
My guess is that he makes 5-10million/year, possibly more. I mean blowing $3million on an FXX-K isn’t for the 1%. It’s for the 0.01%bobby

1.she’s a daughter of the CEO, COO, VP, managing director (it’s not what you know, it’s who you know)
2. she’s a superstar and they want to recruit her (ie your assessment of her is wrong)
3. your skill is just a little more than hers, hence your slightly higher pay (see first line of my post)
4. you don’t know how to negotiate your salary despite being a much superior coder
#1 is wrong, she is not
#2 is wrong, she eventually got laid off because she was so bad and the manager could not take it anymore
#3 is wrong because I know people in my field at my level who actually make less than me
#4 is wrong because of #3, I am making more than a lot of my peers and am at least in the 75-80th percentile of the pay for my position.I am not saying I am not compensated according to the market, what I am saying is that the MARKET itself does not pay according to the difficulty level of the job compared to other jobs I know that need less expertise and pay more.
I don’t get it then. You make more than a lot of your peers yet your are stating that you are not making as much as your peers.
but you know and I know that life isn’t fair.
I’m in medicine. some subspecialty, such as derm, is relatively easy and pays a whole bunch. Internal medicine is complicated and pays a pittance (relative to derm). If you want easy life and more money, go into a subspecialty. Some docs going to disagree but this is general consensus.
If something else is easy and pays more, go do that. Why stay in your field then complain?bobby
Participant
It’s just frustrating, I have looked at node.js, mongoDB, Express.js etc. and all that stuff is WAAAAY easier than what I am breaking my head here doing. I think some of those guys are making $150k+ so i’m thinking perhaps MEAN stack can up my salary? I’m just tired of making $125-130k as I think I should be making way more given how complex all this crap is…
btw, $130k is not enough. Everyone and his dog is making that these days. Even the guy here that barely knows how to markup a HTML document is getting $100k! WTF??
And at my last company…there was an INTERN, she barely knew WTF she was doing and she was paid $95k and did I mention she was an Intern??
not to sound antagonistic. You are an engineer. Look at this problem without an emotional viewpoint.
if your x-company is paying an intern who “barely knew” anything $95K, or nearly as much as you make, to an objective observer:1.she’s a daughter of the CEO, COO, VP, managing director (it’s not what you know, it’s who you know)
2. she’s a superstar and they want to recruit her (ie your assessment of her is wrong)
3. your skill is just a little more than hers, hence your slightly higher pay (see first line of my post)
4. you don’t know how to negotiate your salary despite being a much superior coderonly in the 4th scenario that you can ask for a big raise.
alternatively, if you can’t beat them, join them. Learn a new skill/code and make the money you think you should.bobby
Participantbroke down and got an XBR75x910c yesterday. I worked really hard over the Thanksgiving and felt I deserved a nice reward.

Participantmany lib arts majors are outright brilliant. However, easier to get a pass in lib art than in engineering or physics class.

Participant
Would say this is definitely true. In fact, the mismatch effect is far deeper than the way the article explains it. Reason is not only is there intentional mismatch of black and Hispanic students, there is intentional mismatch of Asian students due to the Ivy League’s racially motivated quota system.
We all know based on elite UC % of Asian population that if the racial quota of the Ivy League is done away with, instead of the 15% bar for Asian students, the Ivys will likely see at least a 20% bump in its Asian population. This intentional mismatch means these students are pushed down to the next tier, making that lower elite school more competitive, yet making it that much harder for the black and Hispanic student to survive.
Let’s say John is an Ivy caliber Asian student and Joe is a Cal State caliber Hispanic. Under the current system of racial preference, both John and Joe will end up in the same UC school. Not only was Joe already ill equipped to handle UC level competition, but now he has to compete with Ivy level classmates too. I saw this first hand 20 years ago, and it has only gotten worse.
I saw this when I myself was at UC. the solution was Joe goes into liberal arts and John into STEM fields. Both get to graduate from prestigious UC schools
then the next step is people complain about lack of diversity in Silicon Valley, tech fields, medicine, etc.
