ParticipantThe (misguided) Iraq war has caused skyrocketing oil prices, in turn causing commodity inflation.
Gas prices increase when measured in dollars. If you measure in euros, pounds, swiss francs, yen, etc… they haven’t increased substantially since the start of the war. The war has had very little effect on oil production. Iraq was limited in how much it could sell before the war by sanctions and now they are limited by damaged infrastructure, terrorism, etc…
Our gas prices here in the US are a reflection of the diminished purchasing power of our dollars. Because everyone buys oil, we compete with the rest of the world and when our currency sinks, oil becomes more pricey.

ParticipantThis was my friend’s house. It’s upsetting to me to see it discussed here like this. Nuff said, I hope.
Sorry. Of course it has also been upsetting for many of us here to watch speculators bid up the prices of homes using crazy loans and by committing outright fraud on loan applications. How many people LIED on their loan applications? How many hedge funds packaged bogus doo-doo loans as AAA and sold them to pension funds? Twenty years ago these shenanigans would have landed those responsible IN PRISON but now it’s all okay for some reason.
Many financially conservative and responsible people here and in other parts of the country refused to participate in this fraud, they refused to put their family’s finances at risk, so they didn’t buy houses. They have been forced to rent, they have been forced to move more often than they would like, and worst of all, they have had to deal with untold amounts of BS from their friends and relatives about why they are stupid for not buying a house. So we are sorry that your friend is in a tough situation, but please feel the same for us that have had a tough time on the other side of this situation as well. ‘Nuff said.

ParticipantHablamos Español!
Puerto Vallarta is getting really developed now too. Tons and tons of condos and they cost as much as the ones do here for the most part. $300K seems to be the going price for a nice 1/1.
Mexico’s relationship with the environment is different than ours — better in some ways, worse in others. All wildlife in Mexico is protected, so that’s good. But there is definitely more trash on the streets than here, so that’s bad.
The NAU is coming and we will all be one big happy family soon. The differences between Mexico and the US are much less stark than they were 20 years ago. In another 20 years they will be even less noticeable.

ParticipantAlong the same lines, I was at the downtown Post Office a few weeks ago and in the line with me was a legal clerk with a HUGE STACK of legal documents to send registered mail, addressed to “ALL UNKNOWN OCCUPANTS”. I was able to see a lot of these as the clerk next to mine handled them, and they were all going to Victorville. My best guess is that these are notices of foreclosure and they’re warning whatever tenants/squatters might be there of the situation…
