ParticipantI think a return to that style of life is actually a good thing. Especially the making your own beer part.
Oh yeah, definitely. It’s nothing to be afraid of, that’s for sure.
I’m starting to suspect that a lot of this collapse fear you hear in the media is just the latest boogaboo to keep people running scared so that they are easily manipulated and fleeced. The War on Terra lasted for a little while and kept everyone good ‘n scared, then they tried to sell us Global Warming but that ain’t working so well since it is currently snowing in Dubai. There is also the old Peak Oil scenario, that one’s good too. Bottom line is, they trot this stuff out knowing that a bunch of geeks will read it on the internet and move their savings into gold or oil or euros or yen or whatever and then they make the market move the opposite way and run off with all the loot. I’m sure everyone here will tell me that I’m a fool and that the sky’s really falling and pretty soon Mad Max and the Humungous will be doing battle in an improvised Thunderdome in the Sports Arena but I’m not buying it. Is the economy crashing? Yep. Are we currently being ripped off? You betcha. Is the government inept, corrupt, and inefficient? No doubt. Are we all gonna die? Probably not.
Just my $0.02…

Participantsocratt, you’re right on all points. I was only trying to point out that collapse is inevitable and has occurred many times throughout human history. The Soviet Union collapsed recently, yet most of the people survived! Yes some died, some froze, some were murdered and some starved. The same was true when the Incan empire collapsed, when the Mayan and Roman empires collapsed (those collapses took hundreds of years BTW!) These things will happen here also. Worrying about it isn’t going to help but a little planning might. Having a gun isn’t a bad idea, some useful items like food and water, a couple of gold coins or diamonds to give the nasty that’s pointing a gun at you to make him go away, that’s a good idea as well. But nothing will beat knowing your family, friends, and neighbors and being able to count on them when times get tough.
Honestly I think that the worst that will happen to the majority of Americans is that they won’t be able to buy new Jet Skis every year. We’re going to have to live like normal people again. That means grandpa and grandma and uncle johnny and his family are all moving into the house and we’re gonna plant tomatoes in the backyard and make our own ice cream for fun on Saturday night.

ParticipantThings are already breaking down all over the US and they have been for many years. Seen a picture of Detroit lately? How about New Orleans? Or just drive through any small town in the midwest and look at the carnage. No jobs, dead malls, everyone on meth, lots of folks on government assistance. Many parts of the US/Mexico border region are in open warfare between rival drug cartels and the police. Police chiefs being shot, kidnappings, beheadings, rocket attacks, car bombs, you name it. Ciudad Juarez (across the Rio Grande from El Paso) is more dangerous than Baghdad and Washington DC is more dangerous than Rio de Janeiro. Here in SD we are quite insulated from this because we have a lot of government money flowing in and a lot of tourist money coming in too. All of this talk about impending collapse cracks me up because it has been happening for 30+ years! The reason most people don’t see it is because they don’t visit the places where the poor people live, they just watch network news, etc… If you really want to prepare for the future, use a little of the money you have left and spend some time in Mexico City, in Sao Paulo, in Buenos Aires. That’s what we are all in for. It will be crappy but people are still going to get along. There will be gunfire in the streets but people will still go shopping. There will still be weddings and birthday parties, it’s just that most of them will be a lot less expensive than they are now. People are going to learn to IGNORE the government. Not fight it, not be frustrated with it, not expect it to get anything but worse but simply to IGNORE it. They’ll pay their taxes but expect ZERO in return. We are very lucky here that we still have good roads! Hopefully that will last a few more years…
Stop worrying and go talk to your neighbors. We’re going to need to work together in local communities to address the problems we face. If you want to go be a lone wolf on your property in the boonies you can try it but unless you’ve spent your whole life as a farmer your odds aren’t good at succeeding.
