ParticipantYeah, all of Borat’s bizarre suspicions about Jewish people and Gypsies are actual beliefs held by people at different times in history. By putting on his “Borat” character he is able to throw these in our face and force us to confront our own prejudices. It is actually a quite subtle and clever technique although at first glance it seems horribly offensive. We feel uncomfortable yet we laugh and then we realize that we’re laughing at ourselves. Who hasn’t been afraid of different people or been suspicious of them at one time or another? The jokes in Borat are all on us, the viewers…

ParticipantSpeaking of Jewish….You see Borat?
If so, how is that not racist against Jews? Why was that tolerated and the movie a prize winner? It might have something to do with the fact that Sasha Baron Cohen is Jewish. Somehow I don’t think that Chris Rock could have gotten away with those jokes… But in any case the jokes in Borat are mostly about racism and xenophobia, they are not actually racist or xenophobic.

ParticipantHave there been studies done on the validity of information gained via torture? It seems to me that torture is a low percentage proposition.
This torture has never been about gaining intelligence. It is about setting the precedent that the government can do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, to whomever it wants. It is meant to give any political opposition pause before opening their mouth. It is about display of ultimate power, nothing more.
CIA officers, military and law enforcement officials and even the Army’s own manuals state that torturing doesn’t produce good intelligence. So anyone who tells you otherwise is just covering up the horrible truth. It’s about power, that’s it.

Participant1. Chinky: looks/feels very asianist (not in a positive way).
Example: “Damn, that house looks so chinky…” (plastic vinyl covers, redwood furniture, the works.)FLU, I think the word you’re looking for here is “chintzy” which is actually has Hindi/Urdu roots and means “gaudily or cheaply decorated”. I am a bit of a racial/ethnic slur aficionado and I have never heard anyone say “chinky”.
BTW, if you enjoy a good uncomfortable ethnic slur as much as I do, make sure to see “Gran Torino”. My only regret is that I didn’t get see it in a left-wing politically correct enclave like San Francisco. I can only imagine the audible gasps at some of the dialogue. I’ll bet people actually walked out…
