ParticipantI think you missed my previous post. Again, outsourcing is overblown.
I agree 100%. However, do not underestimate the power of the media to manipulate people’s opinions, even when they do not match with the reality on the ground.
Most of the big wave of outsourcing has already happened.

ParticipantAnother reason kids aren’t majoring in engineering is because we have outsourced all the jobs. The news for the last 20+ years has been all about how engineering jobs are moving to India and China. Now if you’re a student graduating HS and looking for a career to take you through the next 40+ years, why would you choose one that seems to be dying off? While it’s true that there is still demand here, there isn’t a lot of demand for new grads. Many companies will post an opening asking for someone who has 10 years experience with everything under the sun at a salary of $80K/year. When they can’t find it they have their excuse to go to Wipro or Infosys.

ParticipantBTW, who is going to pay for her international travel?
She reminds me of a young girl I overheard as a TA at UCSD discussing her summer plans: “I can’t get a job paying more than $12/hr so I’m just going to travel around Europe all summer.”
If her parents don’t want to pony up she can just teach English or work “black” jobs for money overseas. It is easy to get an under-the-table job as a waiter/waitress/bartender as a native English speaker in all sorts of countries. Living as a tourist in South America or Asia can be remarkably cheap.
I don’t see that as feeling “entitled”, hell she’s just making the most of her youth. Good on her. Our country would be a better place if more young people did that; everywhere I visit is overrun with young Aussies, Kiwis, Euros, and Israelis seeing the world, having fun, learning a bit about other cultures and taking the odd job here or there for money. Nothing wrong with that!
